I have a 85 pick up and with it being a 4 cyl i dont know what tire size i shoud put on it with out having to re gear it. is 33 too big or will i have to re gear????

Its really personal preference. I have 33x12.5" mud terrain tires on my lifted '95 4Runner ( 4cyl/5spd) with factory 4.10 gears. Its slow, but no unbearably. It takes the 6-7-8% grades south of town perfectly fine in 4th and 3rd. I can do 65-70 and it will still deliver 21-24 mpg hwy. Lots of people say that even 31" tires dogs the 22r(e) too much. I guess I am just used to it as my other two 22re powered Yotas had 31" tires.

Do you have a 5speed or auto? I have a 22re 5speed with 4in lift and 31 toyo MTs. It's not to bad. My buddy has a sas 4runner with an automatic with 35 and it bogs down real bad. If you're patient and don't mind taking hills a little slower, then you should be fine with 31 to maybe 35

As soon as I pulled out of the tire shop I started checking on gear pricing, went from stock to 31's and it was a slug in my book. Best thing to do is throw the tires on and see how it feels. I re-geared to 456's and it pretty much feels like stock again

31's are as big as I would go. It's seriously slow.

Mine was scary on 31s merging onto the interstate. If you never do that, it's bearable. 33s IMO are too much. If you can afford to, rehear. You can always get most of your money back later, 4.88 diffs are in high demand.

with proper gearing you can still do highway speeds with bigger tires. Go with whatever size you want

i have 22re 4spd auto, and stock 4.30 gears with a 5" lift and 32x11.5x15's, and he's not unbearably sluggish to me
but when i drive other people they think its annoying

cruises at 65-70 no problem just takes a few minutes to get there lol

I feel like my 4Runner is "fast".... Its just a stock rebuilt engine, no performance mods (Long-tube header with 2.25" piping, but that doesnt do anything). It doesnt take "minutes" for me to speed up. I really dont know why people complain its slow. Sure, its not a v8. My v8 Tundra is fast, but also heavier.

I've run up to 35's on stock gears when I was younger on 4 cylinder trucks. But going to 5.29's on an 86 4Runner I had with 35" tires really opened my eyes. Fuel economy came back, power came back, and I could actually go up hills on the highway in 5th gear. Amazing. But honestly after having a few V6 tacomas not to mention 5.0 mustangs I could never go back to stock gears and more than 31's on a 22re truck. They really are pretty pathetically slow. My 89 regular cab has 31's on it and it's an absolute slug. You either need torque or gears to turn big meats. The FJ40 with a built 2F I just sold turned 33" tires just fine with 3.70's.

yeah its a 22r five speed, i think im re gearing into the 5's maybe with 35in tires but i want to make it a rock crawler sooo im not sure what tire size i should use

I have a 85 Toyota (5 speed) with 31s and stock lift and I don't think the truck dogs at all. I think has more acceleration compared to my 86 s10 6cyl 2.8

I just bought a 94 4runner 22re 5spd. It's got 4.88's with 30 inch tires on it now. I'll need a set by winter. What size tires would you guys recommend for a more stock feel? I'm hitting 3100 rpm at 65 miles per hour. I can hit 75 but I'm closer to 3700 rpm. Not a lot of fun.

i have had 2 trucks and a 4 runner all lifted 4 in all had 22r (carbureted motor) and all stock gearing and motors were stock also. i ran 33/12.5/r15s on all three i have had NO PROBLEMS making it to 65 or 70 before the end of the on ramp.

33 x 10.5 with 4.88 IFS best combo, like stock gearing
To run 35's I would go SAS and 5.29
This is of course for a stock 22RE 89-95
The 86-88 trucks can get away with less lift
