Some retailers sell some soft tops for around $700. you could do a search online to find them.
Others have made soft tops primarily out of canvas. You could use aluminum or steel as the mounts and pop rivet some buttons on the bed to the canvas top.
The 4runner guys have some cool builds of soft tops to give you some ideas. Its basically like making a truck camper shell but they have a big roll bar.
Heres a good link to a guy that posted how he made a canvas top. http://www.wildyoats.com/canvas_top_tech.htm

I Built this from 1-1/4 tubing, couple bed frame sides, and military canvas. Took some time on the canvas part, but the old lady loves to sew. Bought the tubing, canvas, snaps, snap tool, thread. All done 200$. Clamps on with camper clamps, built 2 legs, so when your out at the lake just take it off, prop it up and u got shade . Shovel mounts farther back towards cab now. Fun project. Gunna do one this winter for the 1st gen 4runner i got now.
