New expedition travel and gear magazine - Overland Journal

Some of you may have already seen it, but if not, I'd like to introduce a new vendor at Yotatech, Overland Journal.

If you enjoy using your Toyota for adventure and expedition type travel, then this magazine will definitely appeal to you. Each issue features trip reports on North American destinations as well as around the world. We also have equipment reviews, vehicle-builds, skills articles and more. Each issue features a showcase of captivating images taken by adventure travelers from around the globe. This is a very high-quality publication where printing methods and materials are concerned. Archival quality, perfect-bound and full color, you'll enjoy the looks of it laying on your coffee table or book shelf. There are no story-breaks, so you can enjoy each feature story uninterrupted by advertisements or trying to find the end of the story in the back of the magazine.

The advertisements we do have are beautifully done, from high-quality advertisers with excellent products and compliment the magazine.

We are not brand-specific, so you will see a diverse selection of different expedition vehicles, of which Toyotas play a great role. We also cover dual-sport motorcycles and moto adventures. Tom Sheppard (Vehicle Dependent Expediton Guide), Tom Collins (Camel Trophy), Chris Scott (Sahara Overland) and Lois Pryce (Lois on the Loose) are among our contributing editors.

To give you an idea of what the content is like, I can tell you that our first issue included articles on an expedition through Africa in a diesel LR Defender 110, "Lost in Libya" on a dual-sport bike, A group trip through Death Valley, 2-Meter VHF communications, Comprehensive Roof-top tent test & review (yes, we chose a favorite), Container/Storage solutions review and a specially-prepared Toyota 80-Series Landcruiser, among others. Each year features a Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Annual Gear issue.

Our second (summer) issue is the "photography issue" and goes to the printer this month and I am really excited about it. It will feature stories on a trip in Mongolia hunting with eagles, the new EarthRoamer JK project, a story on the 1994 Chile/Argentina Camel Trophy Scouting Trip by Tom Collins, A special photography gallery, Expedition photo skills by Tom Sheppard, an exhaustive 12V/120V portable fridge test and comparison (5 fridges), a dual-sport build project, and more.

This is the way I am trying to setup my FJ Cruiser instead of a rock crawler.
The adventure/excursion/exploration type has more appeal to me.

You are definitely not alone! And that is why we started the magazine. There is a huge following of this type of lifestyle that has been severely underserved, especially here in the U.S., until now.

The fridge article should be very good for those looking to equip their rig for some time outdoors.

I know the ice cream bars I served up at last Saturdays Greenwater run were a hit.

Thanks Corey. Yes, 15 pages are dedicated to the very detailed fridge test and review. Each fridge has two pages with detail photos and analysis. We used testing equipment and circuitry along with a data-logger to capture real-time information on each fridge so useful comparisons could be made and all of the specifications and details are summarized in a table format at the end of the article for multiple comparisons at a glance.

Jeff and Michael that joined us from ARB headquarters at the Greenwater run had one in the back of the ARB FJ Cruiser.

A little update on the Journal:

We are well into our second year of operation and things have really taken off! We have added more pages to the magazine and have a healthy lineup of content for 2008. We have already published our annual Gear Guide for 2008, which is currently available as a back-issue at the online store. If you have been thinking about subscribing, you may want to do so before the Spring 08 issue ships out, which is only a few weeks away. Spring 08 will feature a test and review of air compressors, Part II of the Continental Divide ride, and my favorite: Chris Scott's intriguing expedition into the Empty Quarter of the Sahara. I won't spoil the story, but I'll say that it involves Toyotas and "undercover" operations. For those not familiar with the Saharan "Empty Quarter" , I'll quote an excerpt from Chris Scott's sahara-overland.com website:

"The late Wilfred Thesiger's travels in the Arabian 'Empty Quarter' are well known, but the Sahara too has its barren expanses. In the east is the Libyan Desert, while the less well known Majabat al Koubra spreads across the Mauritania-Mali borders. These hyper-arid, million-square kilometre regions within the greater Sahara are barely touched by human presence; they represent the essence of the place known to the Arabs as al sahra: the desert."
