4Runner Tent

Trying to find a tent that will hang off the back of the vehicle and allow use of the rig interior for sleeping, etc. Need to have the tailgate down for more room. Can't be the style that goes to the ground as my lift would make dimensions un-workable. A tent that fully supports itself off the vehicle. I am thinking something that wraps the roof and then down to the tailgate.

Just wondering if anyone out there has found something like this. I have a 2nd Gen 4Runner. Any ideas or suggestions?

i see that you runner is lifted just a touch** so when looking for the tents get some specs on the length of the connection part to make sure that you dont come up short since the angle will be greater. It looks like many of those are pictured with unlifted and low SUV's.

Yes, slightly modified... ...thus the requirement for self supporting tent not going to the ground.

Some of the Explorer models mentioned above might work.

I found this site as well: http://www.xocom.com/ss/Sleepers.html#vehicles

Any opinions? Anyone own one already?

Seats go down

Your seats don't fold all the way down? Mine do... just have to pull on the tab that comes out of the 'crack' in the backseat to flip the seat bottoms up, allowing the seats to fold all the way down.

theres a thread floating around about how guys have made up quick release type connection for the seat bottoms so you can pull them out completely and gain the extra 6" pluss whatever you can when you shove the seats forward. (granted youll have to fill the gap or have your feet/head hang off it)

Well damn! Learn something new every day. My jack and whatnot is in the rear cargo panel things and I had no idea that there was a place for them under the rear seats... That, and the little straps to pull up the seats were missing =/, awesome. (I've officially made myself look like an idiot from the first post). I'm 6'1" so the tent might be a good idea when I go camping out of the back of my runner .

runner tent

I have been working on designing just such a tent for the bask of my second Generation runner and have used some to good success. I am in the process of redesign to make it easier to put up. What I am using is a coleman domed tent that I cut and redesign. It works great. Once I have all of the buggs worked out I will draw plans and patterns so that anyone with minimal sewing ability can make these.

I am working on a tent that will just slip over the extended tail gate and then close in the back of the runner to use as sleeping are. This is my third generation and they have all worked well, but I like to make improvements. My latest idea to extend the rear using an L shapped support bard of the hitch receiver that you could extent easily up to 4 feet. I plan on making patterns and instructions for all of these and will share when I am done. Generally I just start off with a coleman tent that provides the right sigz and from there I modify to fit the runner
