One person in particular was a newbie named Timmy. I thought a repost of the conversation I had with him just this morning might be a helpful way for us all to better understand BAN... and what it means to us.
Lord Elvota, what is a BAN?
No need for Lord Elvota Timmy, Elvota is always fine here on YT. But your question is indeed a good one.
A BAN can have many different meanings, and can be used in many different ways. Here at YotaTech BANS are never taken lightly. Users are often warned many times before a BAN takes effect. Sometimes a BAN has to be applied to keep YT going in the direction best for the overall community.
Am I at risk of being banned?
I would be very surprised if you were. The first step at avoiding a BAN would be to review and follow the YT rules and guidelines. If you are here to learn, spread knowledge, show pics and revel in a great atmosphere with other Toyota enthusiasts… then no way.
I have heard BAN can be caught from others… is that true?
No Timmy, BAN is not contagious. However, you have to think for yourself and always use protection. If others around you tell you it’s cool to be BANNED, you don’t have to listen to them. Don’t be a sheeple. If someone triple dog dares you to try and get banned, then they are not really a true friend.
Did you know that BAN spelled backwards is actually NAB?
Yes Timmy, I did actually know that.
How does BAN effect me and my position in the world wide web community?
Frankly, it’s pretty embarrassing to have BAN. People won’t understand how such a fine, intelligent upstanding citizen such as yourself let things go that far. Some may misconstrue your actions as foolish and that can reflect poorly on your family and possibly effect your credit rating**
Does BAN hurt?
Since we are all here in the virtual world, BAN can’t actually hurt. However, BAN will stop you from communicating with others here on YotaTech, which can be very painful. Owning and modding a Toyota without YT can be a dramatic experience for anyone to get through alone.
How long can BAN last?
There is TEMP BAN and PERMANENT BAN. A TEMP BAN is a very sever warning handed down by YT staffers. It’s a final effort to show a user what if might be like to loose access to the wonderful world of YotaTech. Often, once in the wasteland of the world wide web for a few days or weeks, the TEMP BAN user sees the light and returns with a new vision. If things get worse beyond that point, a PERMANENT BAN can occur… and that never goes away. Does BAN have any color or odor associated with it?
No… in fact, that’s a blatantly stupid question about BAN.
Is there anything I can do for those who have BAN?
Sadly, no. You can try your best to reduce the symptoms leading to BAN by posting positive comments in the Drama Llama Lounge. Try to help the user see the light before it’s to late. Perhaps tell them to "chill out" a bit. But remember to always be respectful when attempting to discourage such negative behavior.
Now run along Timmy... I've got some more mods to do to my 4Runner.
Thanks a lot Elvota. You're the best.
Hopefully this bit of insight can help alleviate any fear or misconceptions about BAN. Education and awareness is half the battle.
** Actually, credit rating can in no way what so ever be effected by BAN, but you'll probably get really fat and smell.***
*** You won't get fat and start to smell... just don't get BAN, all right?
