Okay, I have been a member of YotaTech since June of 2006. I am by far not the most longstanding member, nor, despite my some 4,000 posts am it’s most active or knowledgeable member, but I was a member who liked the site, the atmosphere, and for the most part the people.

Then came lots of drama, I have no need to discuss it here, as it is documented elsewhere. I cut back on my Yotatech browsing and posting.
I began to post my tech, and my time, elsewhere.

I still decided to stick with YT through it all. Then came the selling of YT, which I can't blame anyone for, and the news of the Ads, which I CAN blame someone for. Even through this speed bump of drama, I said, "No, I'll stick with YT, as they fueled my addiction and got me into Toyota 4WD's"

Despite the feeling that I have outgrown the tech, and a lot of the people on YT, I stuck it out....Until today. Today I called it quits.
These new Ad's for completely random things, movies, products, etc that pop up every time you scroll over them (I am referring to the banner near the top, under the nav bar, above the posts) I can ALMOST deal with that, but every time the page refreshes, the ad changes, and every time it does, scroll over it or not, it pops up. Even if I am not viewing YT currently, I can be on a different tab, viewing a different website, and must close the pop-ups from YT. This I cannot, and will not, deal with.

I wish all of you a farewell; I hope we can part under at least semi-amiable terms. I hope that the mods see fit to allow this post to stay as I am not bad mouthing anyone, or the site or anything else. I also won't post a link to where I can be found from now on. I will continue to check PM's here for awhile if you need my contact info, ask for it.

This thread may go unnoticed, or it may skyrocket to 1,000,000 posts who knows. Either YT shall go down in my history books. I only wish she could have done so with more grace and "on top" rather than floundering and sinking slowly into the mire of the internet pop up craze.

So long YT, and Thanks for the beginnings of a great hobby, but I’m off to bigger and better things. See ya on the Trails.

I haven't gotten a single pop up or ad since I joined a few days ago. Possibly it's because I disabled pop-ups?

Sorry to hear that Chris,

I too hate those flipping adds. Though I have have a pop up blocker, which helps.

I had to specificially install the pop up blocker to keep that trash off of my screen.

It sucks.

FYI: A simple pop up blocker stops the pop ups cold.

Why not just post up a simple thread asking how to stop or block pop ups? Or better yet PM a mod and ask them about it. I have never had one and I am on here as much as anyone.

Why bother saying a public farewell? If you want to leave or quit something just do it and be done with it. The post reads like a Shakespearean actors dying soliloquy and only seeks to draw attention despite his protest against drama. If no one reads it, or it gets deleted or has a million posts.

3. The other forum mention.

Why bring that up at all as it has nothing to do with pop ups?

Unrelated historical context only breeds hysteria, i.e. drama.

1. I should not have to add a pop up blocker to surf the sites I love. if I do, I just wont go there anymore, hence here.

2. I have a lot of friends on here, and I am not going to PM everyone of them, this is the easiest way to reach a mass number of people.

3. I mentioned I went elsewhere, I brought no names, or links, or anything else.

Just for kicks, 'cause I am a kicker, I turned off my built in pop up blocker with Firefox 2.0.0.12 and I am not getting any pop up ads here.

The only ads I see are the Google ones top and bottom.
Most of the time they are text ads, sometimes a Toyota FJ Cruiser ad since Toyota now sponsors this site.
Those two ad positions are not even a nuisance to me, so I do not even block them.

I have to agree with the wise Wabbit, the title, the farewell, it all boils down to drama.

There is a thread floating around here already on how to deal with ads that will wipe them out entirely, the banner and tower type.
No doubt it would block a "true" pop up add too, but as mentioned, I have never ever seen one here before.

Half the time it is google text ads, but the other half, I have had 1-800-goodneighbor, a preview for some movie with jessica Alba in it, a Dell Ad... I'll print screem em for you if you want.

Those are banner ads.
There is a HUGE difference between a banner ad and a pop up.
A pop up ad is one you have to click the X in the upper right corner to turn off.

and if I mouse over them, guess what POP up. and as stated above, if I am on another site when they come up, they pop up on that tab too, and I DO have to click the Close X in the corner to clsoe them. Thanks.

WOW, I just installed the add on from the link above and shut down the Fox, and reopened it, and a box came up and I checked the first radio button in it to subscribe, and came here and the Google ads are not even showing.

I ran this on my older PC, but have not put anything back on the new gaming PC I built over the Christmas break until just now.

Best of all the add on is free.

I have installed this on my Mozilla and it works great I can block out all the ads and allow the site to still run for sites that use java. if you are not using Mozilla you should be and this is a great ad on for it.

Thanks for REALLY bringing the drama. The fact of the matter is that by your inability to keep your nose out of every single post that isn't shining the YT knob, YOU are creating the drama.

We can agree to disagree on what Chris wrote. What I see in Chris's post is a sincere farewell, justification for why he's leaving, and confirmation that he isn't getting out of wheeling, that he's just going elsewhere. I'm not such a cynic that I immediately jump to conclusions without giving them the benefit of the doubt. I'm taking it at face value.

As to why he posted, it's just not in all people to just scurry away. He made friends with a lot of people on this forum - and leaving somewhere you've hung your hat for a few years and poured your free time into isn't easy. I'm saying this from experience.

Having to install software just so this site is tolerable is preposterous. We all know why the ads are here now - that's been beaten to death and not worth getting into. I think most of the member's beef is the placement and the unrelated content. But, it is what it is. Some will leave, that's how it goes. As Corey says, don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out.

I see what is getting on Rocko's nerves.... I just got a huge Circuity City ad. Not a banner ad but a big annoying pop up.....and yes i have a pop up blocker on. The expanding Jessica Alba ad is annoying also... granted shes hot but come on

That is the same one I linked above.
I get zero ads.

Two ways to install it.
Either right click an add and choose block, or when you first fire up the Fox, use the subscription pop up window and tick the first button.

Hey! Corey is giving away the key to the castle. He's admin on a site that needs ad revenue to stay viable, yet he's telling everyone how to get rid of ALL the ads - including the google ads. so, if everyone there followed his
suggestions, then the site wouldn't make any money, and then the new owners wouldn't have any reason to keep paying for bandwidth w/o having any income to justify it.

makes sense, doesn't it?

I don't ever get any pop-up adds here. Not once. Never.

I am a member of a bunch of on-line forums and I have seen a thousand of these fairwell speeches. I have always wondered why it seems appropriate. If I no longer wish to be a part of a forum for one reason or another, I just leave and don't come back. Maybe I'm missed, but probably not. Who cares?

I have only been on here a few months but I have no idea what ads he is talking about. I have never had a single pop up ad or anything on this site. But even If i did get a couple pop ups now and again thats no reason to make such a huge deal out of it. Internet period has pop ups. Its not like this site is the only internet site with popups. They are verywhere. If it is that much of a deal to you. Just don't use the internet at all.

Chris, now you are being over dramatic.
Most PC users who have been using the Internet know about ad blockers.
Most run them, I am surprised you have not heard of them or ever ran one.
