Micael Phelps:scandal or not?

I think he's actually going to weather this just fine since he was straight up and apologetic and it would be worse if it was steroids. Even our President has admitted to using it when he was younger. He could lose a couple sponsors but public will forgive him and move on.

I don't think it will be a long lasting scandle-too much else going on right now. There have been many olympic champs that end up on a year long bender after they win big due to the pressure- some of them didn't come out too well and I hope that doesn't happen to Phelps- someone call his Mama to come whip his gold medal butt!

I don't consider this to be a bender as a result from pressure;I'm sure he's done it before and it was a simply a momentary lapse of judgement at a party.

Look at all the celebs (and ones that aren't music stars) that openly admit they toke it up on occasion and still have succesful careers going on. Some even appear on the cover of High Times and no scandals have come forth.

Who cares if he smokes? It shouldn't even be illegal in my opinion. Just illegal to smoke and drive. . .

My brother played soccer at South Carolina and has hung out with Phelps a couple of times. Apparently he is just like most college kids except for the fact that he has millions of dollars to spend on partying. From what I have heard, this isn't an isolated incident. He also likes to bet large sums of money on beer pong from what I have heard...

With friends like that...

Stupid? No doubt. Illegal? Obviously. Immoral? He's supposed to represent the USA, so yes. Expensive? You bet. I think he's more popular in Asia than here, and their tolerance of bad behavior is far less than ours. I read he's already lost over $4M in endorsements.

It'll now be up to the Olympic Committee. One article I read claimed a mandatory 4-year suspension. If so, he's toast.

I only posted the facts as I understand them. To me it's a non-issue, but Phelps is now a worldwide commodity and in serious trouble. Remember what happened to the Dell dude?

who's surprised?

not the best judgment call, but who really is caught off guard here? he's already been slapped on the wrist, let him go. if he still 'hits' his way out of his career, that's his choice, and his problem.

Marijuana is viewed differently from performance-enhancing drugs, according to David Howman, executive director of the World Anti-Doping Agency. An athlete is subject to WADA sanctions only for a positive test that occurs during competition periods.

"We don't have any jurisdiction," Howman said. "It's not banned out of competition. It's only if you test positive in competition."

Now with the Olympic committe dealings is that he hasn't tested postive for any drugs and since the committee probably can't rule upon just a photo or even an admission so unless he tests positive he'll slip around the 4 year suspension but could be placed under probation which seems to be more likely.

a canadian snow boarder tested positive for canibis after winning his gold medal. never lost the medal as far as i know. not sure if it is considered a performance enhancing substance or not. another canadian rower ran into difficulties with a common cold remedy.

some of this seems to be overreaction to the well orchestrated doping scandal of the eastern block countries from years back. how many kids/young adults in his age bracket would test negative for the same thing?! not a big deal in my mind, happened outside of the olympic games and should have no bearing on his eligibility for the next games.

just more sensational reporting from 'the news of the world' gossip rag. if no one purchased these sad excuses for journalistic reporting, these hacks and papparazzi would have to find legitimate jobs. go figure.

I dont think it is a big deal--what if he was from Amsterdam?

Think about this--he has ADD--so what better medicine than the tried and true?? I would prefer my kids to go that direction instead of Drug company meds...

sometimes i think there are too many people worried about other peoples business. Not to mention it might actually help the competition catch up--If they ban him--i will will protest. Not a pot smoker but there are better things to spend enforcement monies on.....

Okay im kinda ticked. (i wrote a long reply to this and i obviously didn't hit post)

But;

I for one don't really care about it. I don't smoke and never have, but i know tons of people do.

Afaik, he wasn't tested positive during the Olympics so im not sure if they can take away his medals like some people i know are suggesting.

At least he man'd up and admitted it and apologized about it.

Its an age appropriate thing, it may be true that he is only sorry cause he got caught, but him getting himself in a photo, he will have to own up to the consequences of that. Whatever they may be.

I like how we use fallen standards to justify further declines in standards. Hey, if the pres did it, it must be OK. How edifying.
