Good point.... but just wait until you have to go and pay outragious prices at the dealer to get the junk worked on. Way to many dealer specific parts. Have you gone back to your "Trooper Board" and bragged about posting this?

i see one major thing wrong with them, there not a TOYOTA... im assuming that you have not seen the show TOP GEAR and how they could not kill there HILUX!!!.....i work on industrial Izuzu turbo diesel engines (6BG, 6HK, 6UZ,4BD serries to name a few) they can build a good solid diesel.. cars and trucks, not so much.. sorry bud, this is a yota forum, pretty sure none of us on here would ditch our 4runners, crusiers, pickups, or tacos for any other 4x4.

my uncle had a honda horizon (jdm trooper rebadge) with the 3.1 turbodiesel....it was a good looking and a great truck for roadtrips and the engine was a beast but the thing was pretty heavy, tippy, and just not built for offroading. A yota is great because they are very capable in stock form. I wouldn't wheel a trooper until i had a good amount into the tires, suspension, and armor. All this is referring to 2nd gens, 1st gens were like runners in capability, but when they redid it, they softened it way too much.

They are also dang near no trade in value!! My buddy just traded in his clean 94 4wd. KBB was $1300! My 91 truck (not suv!) with a butt load more miles is $1700 in good condition.
His MT and plastic radiator tanks.....indestructible I tell ya! |

Hey, troopers are very capable, but are also very flawed when it comes to design. The engineers at Isuzu at the idea right when they built the trooper, they just went about building it all wrong. It's ugly, it's slow, it's heavy, the interior is plain, poor MPG at best, limited aftermarket, tough to find parts for. A few high points are, decent motor(although not by any means powerful), decent off road ability(just so no side angles are involved), decent ground clearance, built sturdy.
But other than that, this is a TOYOTA forum, and most people here will agree that we own Toyota's rather than Isuzu's because Toyotas are better.

we had a 91 trooper, and i swear that thing would not die. i beat the heck out of it offroad while my chevy was in the shop getting a front disk brake conversion, and even pulled out a taco and towed it uphill with the trooper. theyre like anything else, take care of em they'll last. theyre a good rig, but my 22re has more power. well... more than the 91 anyway. not to mention theyre fun to drive, i still regret crashing it. but hey at least it took out a ford!

Up to 91 1st gen
92 up 2nd gen Oh, and I just realized from the wikipedia page that my uncles 3.1 turbodiesel was a 4 cylinder! I always thought that thing was a 6....man it had balls!

thenyeah we had a 1st gen. the alternator always got fried, the fuel pump went out 12 times in the 10 years we had it, but the engine never fried. what pissed me off though is that you couldnt use an impact on the wheel lugnuts... if u did, they'd strip out. haha. every time we took it to a tire place we'd have to replace the lug nuts and studs. (i thought it was the tire shops rippin us off until we got a flat one morning and i used my neighbors air compressor and impact gun... talk about a PITA...
