Ford 302 into 1990 Toyota Fore-Runner

Hello;

I'm new and have read all your Threads on 302 conversions first. I also have the Advance Adapters book on the conversion. Know it inside out but......

However, I do have some questions still.

I have a 2wd 1990 4-door Fore-Runner (4cyl. 22re) My goal is to put a rebuilt 1976 Ford 302 carb'd version c/w a standard 5 speed t5 tranny into my truck. (just for info. only, This is a highway truck purpose only. (not an off-roader one) Has anyone done this before? My question is to anyone, do I need a body lift of 2" or 3"? The conversion book recommends a min. of 2" body lift for the conversion. I think this should apply for 2wd version too. This is for the clearance of the bellhousing to the firewall. It looks like the Ford t5 bellhousing is tall than a Toyota 4cyl one but really don't know about the Toyota v6 bellhousing since I have only owned 4cyl. Toyota versions only. I know the front oil pan problem will not be a problem for me as it will clear the front diff or in my case axle tube. I also know that the Ford t5 tranny has a slight tilt to it too. No worries there.

Thanks for your time,
Rpdtoyz

Defamation of the good 4Runner's name aside...

I don't know if you'd be allowed to drop 70's vintage carb'd engine into a 1990 vehicle. Do you have emissions testing and vehicle inspections in your town/region?

In most places in the US you can't swap backwards with an older engine into a newer vehicle.

Just some food for thought.

I thought in when the first gen. 4-runner's where called '4-runner' and the second gen was called by spelling it out. Maybe I'm wrong, but I will check on this.....can get back to it.

But for now

Thanks (Erich for the reply)
We have no emissions testing and vehicle inspections in effect. That's really nice and do not see them coming in the long run....but time will tell.

Is it because of the ecu on the engine? I just can't see a problem with it.

Some places you cannot swap in an engine that is older than the one you took out.

As far as the name....go out back and look what it says on your tailgate...4Runner. That's what its been called since day 1. Always had, always will.

Like Adam said, where there is emission testing and compliance monitoring, they don't typically allow an older engine in a newer vehicle. Has to do with the ever present push to reduce emissions of vehicles. Now, if you're never going to be checked, then there's not much stopping you, but it still could be "illegal". You'd have to check on that for your country and Provence (?)

it is a 4runner you drive on the golf course. I simply don't think those little golf carts cut it.
