www.advanceadapters.com might want to call them though, their site seems a tad hard to search

No such thing as a complete "kit" just a whole lot of pieces from various different sources. Advance Adapters does make most of the stuff you'd need though.

In their catalogue Downey advises against putting chevy V8's in our lil' toys, but they'll gladly take your money for it if thats what you want.

Yes, I remember reading that in their write-up. You need to upgrade you're whole drivetrain if you put a v8 in there and expect to wheel it.
Why not go with the 4.3?

Yes and no:
Tranny needs to be upgraded.
T-case does not.
Rear axle but only a little. Throw in a V6 third with a Detroit or ARB and it'll hold up just fine.
Front axle would definately benefit from Longfields, etc. but you want to do that anyway if you wheel it. IFS front end won't hold up well at all, would need to replaced with solid axle.

ok so i'm a bit of a newbie at the whole four wheeling game. why would the IFS not hold up well? i don't plan on doing alot of like rock climbing and such but i just wanna go muddin every now and then so the ladies are all "ooo he's so cool" haha. plus my little 114 hp 22re just ain't cuttin the mustard on power. i'm gettin passed by 3 cylinder geo metro's and its not fun. especially after owning an 01 chevy s10 regular cab stepside witha 4.3 that would keep up with a 00 sierra 5.3.

in way over my head? no. i've built several custom vehicles in my time and i know what i'm doing, but this is my first 4wd most of my vehicles have been 2wd lowriders and i decided to go the other way this time. i just need to know if the stock ifs will hold up as long as i don't do any major wheeling with it. just a little show off every now and then and mainly to get me to my huntin spots. I don't plan on puttin an ungodly 350 under the hood just a regular rebuilt motor with nothing but exhaust and a full open air cleaner.

tweak the 22 a bit and it'll handle just fine. The trucks are so light you can get thru a lot with gearing and good tires. We had a mud bog last summer and 2/4 trucks that made it were toyotas. the chevy's and fords with the high hp just dug.

First, lemme just throw one stone (okay, BRick) at the S10 - if you had wheeled it even a little you would know how IFs breaks. S10s aren't even good cars, let alone trucks... anyway... (I feel better) (EDIT- Just realized your S10 was not 4wd. My bad...)

The Toyota IFS is fine. It will handle all the wheeling you ever want to do if the truck is stock and you don't go bigger than say, 31" on tires. It will STILL handle serious wheeling up to 33s, and be a bit more careful and it will still get you down the trail with 35s (all this of course assumes good maintenance and gear changes) but you'll replace the occasional axle and idler arm. BUT, toss in a V8....... A mild little small block, say 200 hp or so, not a problem. With 31s it will still last forever. Bigger tires or a bit more horses - drive sanely and it'll be fine. More power than that, or go to 35s or bigger, or start getting show-off-ish and you will start breaking stuff. A lot.

The above was a generalization, but maybe explains better what they're tryin to tell ya.

As to the rest of the drive train. The 4cyl transmission is not very strong. The V6 transmission is excellent and can handle the V8 - Downey be damed! IRoinically - the 4cy tcase is stronger than the V6 tcase. Go figure...

The rear axle is not a problem. Yes, the V6 rear axle is stronger than the 4cyl axle, but the 4cyl axle is still stronger than a Dana44! Again, driven sanely these things can take it.

So go for the v8 and don't overdo it. You'll be fine.
But there is not a kit, you will have to get various adapters and parts and make up some stuff yourself.

thank you flamed, even tho you flamed my tenner (shame... i loved that truck lol, yeah it was 2wd) but that was the answer i was lookin for. i don't plan on goin any bigger than 33's and i'm not going to drop a monstrous 350, just a stock 350 with a little flowmaster action and chrome air cleaner. and about the kit thing yeah i figured there probly wasn't a "kit" but that advance adapters has all of the hard parts that i need and anything else i can probly fabricate. see shop class will finally come in handy

At what point does one have to swap out axles? How would our v6 2nd gen axle stack up against, say a ford 9"? J/W

depends on the use. rock crawling, definitely need something stronger than the 8", especially if you like the stupid pedal. for street use, i've heard of the 8" being fine for 300hp, but that's with small, street tires(like on a supra or 2wd truck).

the only real upgrades in strength over the 8" are a ford 9", dana 60, or stronger. the ford 8.8", chevy 10 and 12 bolts and dana 44s are all the same strength or weaker.

ummm....i have 35's on 20's. i want to put a 327 in my truck, ive got the v6. if i changed the gears to 4:56's would it be neccessary?
and what would break the IFS?
i go through the trails once in every blue moon...depending on how persuasive the girl is.
should i consider a SAS swap?

Well, a 327 and 4.10s would be pretty good.
4.56s and 35's is a bit undergeared though, i'd go 4.88's at the minimum.

If you don't hit the trails that often, then don't do an SAS. You won't need it, IFS will be better in your case.
