1994 4x4 3L swap and build up

Ok, I've been researching diesel swaps for my 1990 pickup for quite a while now, and have come to the conclusion that a Toyota diesel will probably be the most cost-effective way to go. I know that the 2L, and 3L engines will bolt up with little modification (just swap the bell housing for an L series one) but, they are priced so close to the 1kz engines (that have more power) that I'm beginning to consider them as well. Both are in the $2000 range.
The trouble is: Will it fit the same mounts as the L series engines? And, since it doesn't come with a wiring harness, is it possible to mechanically inject it? (The one I am considering is a JDM import from a hilux surf --Japanese 4runner)
I've been all over Google searching this stuff, and have not found anything satisfactory. Any help is appreciated!

Ok, I finally found a forum on mechanical injection, and they say to use a Mitsubishi pump. Here's the link: http://oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/33912-toyota-1kz-t-engines-electronic-vs-manual-injector-pumps/

With my current research it's looking like I'll be mechanically injecting a 2LT-E, getting a 3L head, and an L series bell housing.
Unfortunately, the only place I've found to get the head is Alibaba which seems to be a bunch of Chinese knockoffs. They have 3L long blocks for $500, bran new, but I don't know if I want to risk it. The head is about $50.

You want to look down under, NZ and Australia. It's still possible it's a knock off but at least someone else gets to deal with the Chinese markets!

You can find them on eBay also and by pass Alibaba.

What engine are you referring to? About the only engines I've been able to find on eBay are JDM or Alibaba L, 2LT-E, and 1KZT-E. Maybe my search is a little too narrow.
Glad to know someone is reading this thread. Thanks for the input!

The 3L head, I used some combination that included 2.8L for search terms to get them to show up iirc. Sorry ADD and that was yesterday

They have a good community down there almost exclusively diesel too, it's where I finally dug up usefull information for my diesel turbo.

Ok thanks! I'll have to check out some auzie forums. I've been all over gumtree in the past couple of days. I found a couple 3L heads for $250. Complete 3L engines are about $2500.

I just found a 1985 Toyota hilux diesel engine on eBay.($500) However, in the description, it is called a 2.4D. Is that a 2L improperly identified? I've never seen anything like it on Google or anywhere else. If it's a mis-marked 2L, then I'll probably grab it, and throw a turbo kit on it for sure!

The kz fit questions? Not from what I am seeing. The models are the same years as the rz engines which requires some creative mounting. The engine bay is taller by an inch or more so they use a really short mount and lay it over a few degrees.

If you have to fab mounts or install a body lift for a 1kz I'd look for the replacement they phased in for it instead should be the same size.

Does anyone know where I can get a 2lt exhaust manifold? I've found a 3l, and want to turbo it. Just wondering how far the interchangeabity goes between the R and the L engines. Will an RTE manifold work? Or am I all wet?

I'm still on this Diesel quest, I've got a 3L coming, I just need a bell housing. I don't know anything about determining which tranny my truck has, so I can't find the correct bell housing. Here are the ones I found on eBay, don't know if they'll work or not.
Not a very good screenshot but it provides needed information.

After a lot of digging, I think I've got the W56, but, I'm not sure. Here's a shot of the vin tag.

Progress report

This thread looks like a lot of jumbled inquiries by a distracted brain! LOL!
I now am the proud owner of a salvaged 3L Diesel engine. The above mentioned bell housing has also been purchased. My project truck has changed from the single cab pictured above, to an X-Cab, because of my commuting needs.
So, I hereby transform this thread from a dedicated inquiry thread to a build/ swap thread.
1st, pix! New rust bucket
Bed off, and other work as I awaited the arrival of the new powerplant
3L in a crate!
That bell housing came fast! (Edt 2months, adt: 3 days!)

Gonna start pulling the v6. If you're interested let me know. I want $600 for both the engine, and auto transmission.

Just a few more things to undo, and this old "lump" will be free. All the bolts are out of the bell housing, all plumbing is disconnected, and now I'm stuck on the wiring. I don't know if the computer controls anything other than the engine itself.
Gonna do some digging.
After that, I'll weasle my way down to the mounting bolts and wrench them out, so, I can wave bye-bye to the 3VZ-E.

So, what plug runs the auto transmission and engine? I'm willing to keep the ecu to simplify things, but don't know what plug(s) to pull.

If you are going manual trans and mech pump with an ecu delete look into how the car seated trucks were wires.

Thanks for the input! Yeah, I am going mechanical, and manual. I'd like to keep a/c, and possibly cruise. So, I'm not sure if I need the ECU for that.
The wiring diagrams in my Hanes manual are difficult for me to read (I've got no experience with this). They have a separate diagram for each system, so I get lost quickly 😁
