Rear or front diff? I'm guessing rear.

Rear. I'm going to put the front diff in the rear now, and the front axle will not get assembled now until it gets the right gears....

Pyrojoe try this gear ration calculator it lets you compare two ratios http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html. The Mercedes motor wants to run just above 3000 rpm at cruise speed.

Edit: The engine wants to cruise at 2400-2600 RPM, not 3000 RPM.

All you have to do is take it out, nothing else. Stock lines will work, but not with bio-diesel. If you're running anything besides straight diesel, even B20, change your lines to bio-diesel friendly lines, or you'll regret it. I've seen some pretty cool stuff in my bio-diesel research at school so far.... get bio-diesel lines.

Update** Today I did some craigslisting and some calling and found a transmission FINALLY and found a V6 diff for the rear. I'll probably get a trail gear high pinion one when the time comes for the front. Now I'm trying to decide on gear size. Truckman is highly against numerically high gears, which I strongly disagree with. He's in it for mileage ONLY. I'm in it for mileage and ROCK CRAWLING! I've heard that you should gear it like the 22R, 31's 4.56 - - - 33's 4.88 - - - - 35's and up 5.29

So should I just go with 5.29's? I'm staring with 35's and upgrading to 37's at the next tire purchase
Here is my 2 cents on the gears. The commuting that i do with my 4runner is mostly highway and its in the hills of vt so i would think its going to be worst case. I ahve run 4.10 gears the whole time. I started with 33 10.5 bfgs seemed to be a good combo for the HWY(5th gear the whole time hills or not) and i went wheeling once with that combo and it did well. I then got 37" tires and the truck at take off wanted to fall on its face. Around town it was sluggish but once the turbo hit it wasent so bad. On the HWY with the 37s and 4.10s i had to down shift into 4th a few times on the way back to vt on the hills. Something to think about is that toyota made a turbo motor for our trucks and the turbo trans has a really low first and second gear for a reason because with no spool there is no power. So i think an ideal set up for a wheeler and a rig that you want to do at least 70 on the hwy woud be turbo trans to help it get going(gear 3-5 being normal ratios) and 4.30 or 4.56 for a 37" tall tire.

As far as gear ratios go, I am on no sleep from black friday shopping so I dont have the energy to do it right now, but I will compile a list of quotes from each build I've seen and what gear ratio/tire size they are using. I know of at least 2 people running 5.29's that love them. 4.3's are still too low, 4.56 might work. 4.3's are hard to come by too. Im a craigslist shopper lol
It all comes down to what do you want to do with it? trail, trail / street or trail street and hwy. 5.29 will over rev on the hwy

FYI 4.30 come from the factory in 4cyl autos

So here's my list of om617 yota swaps with their tire sizes and gear ratios

http://toyotadiesel.com/forums/showt...?t=2516&page=9
31's with 4.56

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f114...01/index8.html
5.29's with 33's was overgeared.

http://www.superturbodiesel.com/std/...d.php?tid=1961
4.56 with 33's getting 20-22mpg but wants more top end power

http://www.4btswaps.com/forum/showth....952-Benz-Swap
38.5's with 5.29s and getting 18mpg mixed with trails/highway. His speedo is "right on" and he is pleased with how it drives

I found a great deal on a brand new high-pinion diff with 4.88's and and ARB all set up and ready to go from Marlin Crawler for $1000 on craiglist ($1600 retail value). So now I just need a V6 rear diff and an ARB for it and I'll be set!

Edit: I ended up buying a brand new V6 Rear Diff w/ ARB from Trail Gear and had absolutely nothing but problems with it!! The high-pinion Craiglist unit has served me flawlessly. Go figure! After years of problems, ARB finally said that Trail Gear is the cause of many complaints against their locker. Trail Gear damaged the o-ring sealing surface inside the diff, which allowed oil to leak past it, which in turn allows the gear lube to siphon out the air line when it's not pressurized.

Thanks to Roger Brown for helping me solve my shimming issue!! I started with .04" shims stock on top and bottom on both sides. Passenger side was at 5 lbs drag and drivers was at 7 lbs. I set the drivers up with .03" and the passengers with .026" and they are both now perfectly at 15 lbs drag. Apparently you want more drag with larger tires, not sure why... Hopefully the new rotor will come this week and I can get this sucker buttoned back up finally.

My diesel tech friend finally made it over today and we got the head off. What a job!

Glad I took it off, the head gasket was showing signs of blowing out VERY soon. Everything is also disgustingly dirty so it will be good to get it all cleaned up.

First cyl after a little cleaning:

Second cyl still dirty:

And there's still some cross-hatching on the lower cylinder, but it's gone up top.

A trick my tech buddy told me is after I clean the cylinders out is coat them with Marvel Mystery oil.

Now I will be waiting on peachparts to be delivered once I get them all ordered. I have to deicide if I want a new water pump, a new timing chain tensioner, and what I want to do with my injectors. They're really dirty. I don't know if I should buy new ones or send these out to get rebuilt or just run 'em as is (after cleaning of course).

Edit: My stock injectors were awesome. I replaced with Monark and made the mistake of allowing the Bosch shop to throw my stock nozzles in the trash. The Monark's were junk and decreased my power and mileage.

And!! here is the mercedes forum i have been on for 5 or 6 years, and a write up for injector cleaning (the Mercedes injectors are all very similar even though we are talking about a different engine), lots of discussion of pop-pressure and other techniques. If you have a diesel tech buddy i would have him Pop test them and they will be good as new
(actually if you raise the pressure a little and get them all exactly the same they should be better than new)

John Deere ran a 5 cyl in the 5325. It was 55hp. That pump would have to be heavily modified. Personally I would go after the pp diesel pump with 7.5mm internals. His website in in finish as he is in Finland but he seems to be the best there is for 617 pumps.
