Im interested in making a cummin's 4bt toyota crawler. it would have loads of torque and would clime like crazy with low rmps. Just not sure bout what transmission and adapters would be needed. I have seen a 4bt in a 92 yota its on youtube!

Well I have also inquired a 1986 4x4 and want to do a 4 bt swap the only thing stoping me is the bell housing any sugestions on what I should do any info would be beneficial thanks

NV4500 i believe is what came behind a 4bt, if you want a stick. thats the way i would go, i hope you aren't thinking of attaching the toyota trans to it, i highly doubt that thing would survive a trip down the street (idling mind you) mated to a 4bt.

I don't think a NV4500 ever came behind a 4BT. They came with TH400's and some sort of Ford manual trans, and possibly others. The 6BT's had NV4500's behind them.

Hm, maybe thats what i was thinking.. I know you can run them behind a 4bt (no idea whats involved to mate it, if anything), a bunch of guys over on Pirate run them. It'd be a cool swap for sure, but practicality-wise, not really worth it IMO. You'll never be able to tow the kind of weight the engine was designed to pull because now you're running into frame strength/suspension issues…

Yes they don't come behind 4bt's stock, many people run them though. 4bt and 6bt's are pretty much the same except the 4bt missing 2 cylinders. 4bts are great engines though I wouldn't recommend one for a toyota pickup. They are big and heavy, unless you plan on a SAS and complete drivetrain upgrade.

What are your guys preferences over the 4bt and the 1KZ TE? Ive been looking into 4bt swapping my Toyota but now im stuck and need opinions. Anything helps. Thanks.

I also have the 1KZ-te out of the KZN-130. I would definately recommend it especially with a manual transmission behind it.

For what it's worth, there is a modest 4BT Toyota Pickup running around, and by modest I mean it's got stock axles vs. full widths that make it illegal in a lot of states, and isn't a mud queen sitting on 44's. It's sitting on 35's with stock Toyota axles, and it's only getting 20-27mpg with the average being closer to 20. Not very good mileage after all! Guess it is just too heavy!

I would think a 4bt in a first or second generation Toyota 4x4 would get better mpg than you guys are saying. In two different half-ton Chevy 4x4 on 35' tires I've seen , they were getting 23 to 30 mpg. Both with 700R Tranny's.
And a 4bt weighs a little over 600 pounds loaded. I would definitely run my batteries on both sides next to the tailgate.
