2.4 Diesel into '91 4Runner ?

I have a 1991 runner (rustbucket) with the 3.0 5spd that runs perfectly and a 1990 runner (cherry body) that has a blown 3.0. When the weather warms up I am going to swap the 3.0 into the rustfree runner.

I have this leftover rusty runner that has nothing else wrong with it other than the rust and a saggy rear. Interior perfect, all options work, mechanically great, ect. I have just purchased a 1985 4x4 with a 5 spd and a 2.4 diesel. This truck runs great but the body looks like a dogs a** and the brakes are gone.

I am wondering since the diesel is the same as the 22r as far as bolt locations and such whether I can put that into this old runner with the parts I have. Obviously, I would be using the trans and transfer case from the diesel also. I am not looking for a speed demon, just something to tool around in without scrapping out ol rusty trusty.

Looking for ideas, thanks.

So, you want to put the 2.4 diesel into the '91 that had the 3.0?

Yes, as a way to utilize the 91 body and the diesel driveline.

You can do it. You'll just have to modify for motor mounts and transfer case crossmember.

Could I use the mounts and crossmemeber out of a 22r truck? I have an 87 4x4 with the 22r engine also. Thanks.

The mounting locations on the frame are different, but you can use the parts.....just to have them welded in the right place. For instance, the new mounts will have to sit a bit further back towards the firewall. That's all I know, though.

Is your engine a 2L (Normal aspirated) or a 2L-T (Turbo)?

The 2L on a 4Runner must be a dog, the 2L-T it's OK but a bit underpowered...

2L but I am not going to be looking for a speed demon. Just something to put around in. It will be lucky if it ever sees 60 miles per hour

FYI the 2L makes only 72 hp @ 4000 RPM with 115 ft·lb @ 2200 RPM. That means its even less powerful than a 22re with 116hp and 140 ft-lb at 2800RPM. Even the 2L-T makes less power than the 22re. Either way good luck with the swap if you plan to go through with it

If it is ungodly slow I might just part both the diesel truck and the 4runner out rather than put my hours in installing the engine. Has anyone ever drove both a 2nd gen 4runner with the 22re and also a 2LT. How do they compare?

I'd NEVER put ANYTHING SMALLER than a 22re in a 2nd gen 4Runner. They are slow with a 22re, I couldnt immagine a 2lt.

Swap the 87 body on the 85 diesel chassis.

Do it. Build something solid and it will run forever. the 2L's last forever and if you don't plan on going 60+ then there should be no hesitation. expect 30MPG
