For those who have completed a 1UZ swap. Share your thoughts about your swap

I was thinking we should have one thread that is dedicated to those who have done the 1uz swap on there rig. If you have done the swap and run it, please leave details about your rig, thoughts, things you would do differently next time. Picture heavy is a good thing. Are you IFS or SAS, tire size, tranny used, etc. A link to your build page is good so others can easily find your full thread.

This will give those who are considering the swap a place to go to and see what is possible as well as idea's on what they like or don't like.

I have a 1994 4runner originally the 3.0 V6. It has the original R150 5 speed. I installed a 1994 LS400 1UZ mated to the R150 transmission. When I originally did the swap I was IFS. I have since upgraded to a SAS. I am running Yukon 4.88's front and rear Elocker rear and high Pinion elocker front. I am running 35" tires. I average about 16 mpg. I am heave as I am fully loaded for overland expo, bumpers, winch, a lot of recovery gear, chain saw, etc.

Definitly worth it. I have done several swaps for people over the last few years, including one for 4WD Toyota Magazine. If I get another yota I wouldn't hesitate to do this swap again!

I love how mine turned out. It's not a street driven rig but I have only had one breakdown in the six years since I did it.

I put a 1992 SC400 1uz into my 1989 pickup. I retained the Lexus auto transmission and mated it up to dual Toyota transfer cases with an Inchworm prerunner adapter. I used the power steering pump and tensioner bracket from an LS400.

Problems to date:

1. Failed aftermarket cooling fan temp sensor. (replaced by Jegs under warranty)
2. Inadequate power steering pump. I run 39" Krawlers and even with hydro assist the Lexus power steering pump just doesn't move enough fluid to work well. Upgraded to a trail gear and custom made bracket
3. Transmission fluid starvation. When I get on steep...I mean steeeep inclines the Lexus auto will starve for fluid and lose pressure and basically shift into neutral. I have plans to switch to a deeper sump 4runner transmission pan to see if the extra fluid will prevent this problem
4. failed ECM. This is what stranded me and it happened this year. The 1uz's are all 20+ years old now and failed ECM capacitors are a very common problem. When they fail they will no longer power the fuel injectors. You can buy a capacitor kit for about $12.00 and repair yourself. I have several 1uz's engines and just swapped ECM's for the time being but based on the the symptoms the other one gave before failing I believe this one is on it's way out too.

Here are just a few pics. My swap is in this section somewhere if you want to see more.
