cheapest would prolly be the 5m, i havent done that swap but ive read up on it alot.. seems that the motor mounts out of a cresida will swap and the oil pan will work with an ifs truck, plus its an older motor so i would think the wiring would be a lil simpler? good luck with the swap!

5mge rules. great power band, loads of torque and a great exhaust note. I don't know why toyota never put them in a truck to be honest. I just swapped one into my old 5me sohc powered cressida. You will never look back at a 22r!!!

I was just reading about doing 7mge swaps, but after reading this I might just do the 5mge. Will the 5mge still get decent gas mileage?
My truck is a stock 1990 22re, 4x4, 5 speed. Can I use my original tranny and t-case still? |

yea my buddy that did the 5m swap gets just as good mpg's as my 22re. well i got a straight axle to put in so im goin to do that and save the swap fir when i blow the new 22re up. i think im goin to do the 7m though they have more power and are the easiest

What do you mean easiest? I thought a 5m was easier to install than a 7m, now I'm just confused. Oh well guess I'll just do a diesel instead.

Having done both the 5m and the 7m, there is no difference in the difficulty of the swap. They are pretty much the same motor. You will need fab skills, and wiring skills.

What about doing a 3S-GE swap? Has anyone pulled a 2.0 from a mid 80's Celica? I had an 87 GT-S and that thing ran! Would this be possible, well worth it?

idk i ve never heard of anyone swapping that. but i was reading up on the 7m swap and they said that the 7m is easier because the motor mounts line up with the 22re mounts and you dont have to relocate them. u just have to put indents in the firewall and get a bell housing and wiring harness radiator and fans, etc

That's wierd cause I heard it was the exact opposite, the 5m lines up with the mounts and the 7m requires moving the mounts. I dunno I can't find any good reason so far to justify this swap, trying to go diesel anyways.

Dent in the firewall and maybe the booster as much as you can, put the 5m motor mounts on the next position forward on the 7m block, add 22re rubbers and the 7m drops on to the 22re mounts. Literally. If you use IFS, you will have to drill a new dipstick hole unless you get a cressida block. I bought the 5m mounts, cressida pan, and dipstick separately after snagging a rotten supra from a garage for 500. I would advise restraining the movement of the motor to keep firewall problems down, use a donor supra to make sure you get everything and trace all the wires out in the truck harness before pulling the old motor so you know what else you disconnected when you pull the harness. I am in the throes of wiring my runner right now, first time digging into electricals this far, and without the factory electrical manuals for both vehicles, and supracharged.com I would have given up. I am hoping to snag a v6 truck PS pressure hose to see if it will work between the 7m pump and the truck steering box. Also want a v6 cluster to avoid messing with my tach. Looks like I am going a different route than most with my cooling in that I cut out the rad support so I could install the motor, cut out some of the latch structure in the front of the hood, and modified what was left of the rad support and my grill to put the rad in front of the support instead of behind (cost me the upper bumper bolt mounts so far), making room for a taurus puller fan. Corax has an awesome thread on this board that I re-read constantly (for moral support as much as anything now, but he put me on to the steering dampener having to go) and there are several good (albeit old, not much activity there as of late) threads at supracharged.com.
I also am taking anything I can think of off the supra before I get rid of it (rear diff with lsd, power window motors for spare rear window motors, all brake fittings, connectors, ebrake handle and cable, PS fittings, etc) After this, I will be putting a vw diesel with a manual trans swap in my pickup... |
