98-04 Tacoma 3RZ to 5VZ Swap/Conversion

I have a 2004 REGULAR CAB 2.7 4X4 that I want to convert to a 3.4...the popular answer on most threads seems to be "Just sell/trade your truck for one with a V6." Apparently those people aren't aware that the 3.4 was not offered in a regular cab after 1997. Has anyone successfully done this swap AND have pictures or helpful tips about the swap?? I have found several threads that hint around about tips/suggestions, but nothing substantial. Thanks.

Best advice would be to buy a wrecked donor truck of the same year as yours. That will make the wiring swap the easiest and you'll have EVERYTHING you need.

If you embark on this, please do a writeup.

Thanks, scuba. If I do decide to tackle this, I will be sure to take plenty of pics.

I have done some 2.7 to 3.4 swaps and they are harder than a 3.0 to 3.4 swap. First problem is new tranny and then cut off and move the motor mounts. Also the fuel lines need to be changed or figure out your own fuel filter set up. Then when all seems done the drive shaft length is different. If you want you can call and i could filll u in on the rest.

Thanks for the response, MSR. I just ran across a 2000 model Limited 4X4 4Runner with a 5 speed for $1500.00 and I have been pondering buying it just to ensure I have everything I need, like transmission, motor mounts, computer, air box, radiator, exhaust, etc. I didn't realize that the motor mounts were welded to the front end as opposed to being bolted; that's disappointing since getting the engine/driveline centered in the vehicle is now part of the equation. Didn't think about the fuel line issue either. What are your thoughts on the difference in the year models? Do you think the wiring from a 2000 would be problematic meshing up with a 2004 model? Thanks!!

As long as you have good access to wiring diagrams the difference in years wont matter that much its still a involved swap. I do suggest getting a complete donor truck for 4 cyl to 3.4 swaps so many little things are different.
