3rz swap info

I searched and I barely got any results. If someone wants to search again and post some results that's great but I'd really appreciate info from people who have actually done the swap (if there are any).

My truck is a 1990 4x4, 5spd, 22re.

Does it bolt up to the 22re tranny? If not is it possible to bolt up to the 6 speed tranny? I only ask because I've seen a 6 speed for sale for a decent price.

Is it easier to swap into a truck with the V6 3.0L? If so I might just sell mine and buy an extended cab V6 cause mines just single cab, 2 birds 1 stone.

I guess people just talk about swapping engines and no one ever does it?

Wink

sorry about your frustration, most people take a bit of time to read through some of the threads, I can only suggest that you give people time to find the thread before you give up on them, I have only just found it myself, you have already answered one of your questions. naturally it is easier to just buy a vehicle with the engine you are looking for, most engine conversions cost a lot of money that could have been saved if they simply changed vehicles. Some do the change because at the time it looked like the cheaper way out, but I can tell you it is not, buying adapters and modifying things because the body with your engine has been altered at the factory to carry that mod. the second part you mentioned was you may prefer the other model, because of the cab setup. I would say before you think of modifying your vehicle, be sure that vehicle is what you will be happy with in the long run. You will never get your money back on any modified vehicle.

By the way maybe you should check this guy out

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f161...mounts-190437/

He may be able to help you, sometimes you have the answers in the same place you are in, just need to look. I have joined this forum to get information about other mods for my vehicle, and I am in Australia, but it all helps in the end.

I wasn't frustrated, just kinda surprised that for all the talk about engine swaps and people giving advice on what to swap maybe someone might have some real info.

I would prefer to stick with the older style trucks because I can get one for $6000-8000 less than a 96 Tacoma. Plus I just like the older trucks a bit more and any aftermarket for them is usually cheaper. I don't really build a truck to my likings just to sell it so losing money when I go to sell doesn't bother me because I drove it how I wanted it to be.

Talking

Well as I have also said maybe the link above may be of some help to you, I had a quick look around for you, my biggest problem is I am in Australia, and you have vehicles we do not have and visa versa. I have made modifications to my vehicle, but the names of some of the things I used may leave you wondering what it is, I understand that some people like the older cars, I do, my vehicle is 1985 4 Runner, and I see you have those in abundance, but when I say I have used a Holden engine many of you would not have heard of them. This makes a lot of my friends ask; Why go to America to find information about mt vehicle when America doesn't have this engine, they do not understand that you have other things that I may use, and maybe even go to the lengths of importing it from your country. I am only trying to help you if I can, and you looked like you were frustrated at no response, I have had things in forums that have laid dormant for months, then someone finds it and responds, sometimes I have long forgotten what it was and have found an alternative. I wish you luck with your search.

Clive.

ORS used to sell the wring harness conversion but tehy are out of business. I plan on putting a 3rz into my 89 when the 3.0 goes.

it is my understanding that DOES have the same bellhousing as the W56 tranny.. however that information didnt not come from a reliable source, so i ahve no idea if its true or not.

Although I have no first hand info with the swap, I have done alot of reading about it.
I believe the W56 will bolt up to the 3rz, you may have to use the W59 bellhousing (the standard 3rz 5speed). Although if your going to throw in an engine with 40-50 more horses it may be smart to step it up to the R150(1?;F?) that's used with the 3.0 or 22ret..

I think you'd have more trouble putting a Tacoma 6Speed in than dropping the motor in, the tcase is in the wrong side..
I have talked about this swap on this site before, so maybe try looking up posts by me with key words "3rz swap". I know there's a guy on here that did a 2rz swap into a first gen pickup, relativley the same swap.

Also, search pirate 4x4 and go to Petersons4wd mag website, I know for a fact they have a pretty detailed article. In the august 08 Toyota special P4WD mag they did a swap into a truck named "clampy" "Clampy 3rz swap"..

Good luck on your searching..

$600 for a wiring harness? Makes swapping easier but I dunno if it makes it $600 easier.

You read the part about them being out of business right..?

Oh and I'm sure you expect exhaust work with an engine swap, keep in mine the 3rz exhaust is on the passenger side, not the drivers side like your truck.

Nope, didn't know they were out of business just found the link to the wiring harness. No wonder they went out of business $600 is a little much for a bundle of wires hahaha.

i have not looked into doing a swap but i have looked into the differences between the 3rz(2.7), 2rz(2.4 and 22re(2.4) the bell housings are all the same the old school 22re was backed by a w56 which will bolt directly to the new motor from wat i have found, the w59 is on all new 3/2rz motors and can handle all the power you could be looking into my only advice is not to start dropping gears with big tires unless your about to crash other wise you risk shearing teeth off the gears. from what i have found swaping these motors in 80's trucks is common and there is actually a few pages you may want to look into

The 3RZ 5spd is a W59. When doing a swap into an older truck, the W59 bellhousing must be used. It will bolt onto any older W or G series transmissions. Inchworm Gear also sells an adapter to use the W59(Tacoma) trans and retain the gear driven trans case from the older trucks. I believe some trans case crossmember adjustments are needed, whereas the W59 bellhousing on an older W or G series trans, will not need any crossmember modifications.

I just purchased a 3RZ complete(engine, accessories, ECU, complete harness, W59 bellhousing and clutch components, all evap emmisions stuff) for $1500.00. '98 Tacoma 4WD, 5spd. 120K miles. This swap will be happening very soon in a '84 carb truck. I will post up how easy or difficult the swap is. And I will do my best to include all the different aspects of the swap. I have researched for weeks, but no where can I find every part of the swap. Whats needed, or not needed exactly. I will try to resolve that.

I have an 187 toyota pickup with a standard 22re. It either blew a head gasket or something with the timing chain just yester. So i think its a perfect time for a new engine. Everybody tells me to get a 350 but i wanna keep it light so i was gonna go with 2rz/3rz turbocharged(runs in the family) so maybe you would wanna look into that. You wont need a new tranny besides without a turbo it have alotttt more power in the first place

I'm a little late to the party, but, and i hate to say this cause i have been in your shoes, you will save money, time, everything just buying a V6 truck. There is zero reason or return in investment in going from 22re to 3vze.

If you must keep your truck and want to do a swap, do something else. A 7mge is what i would recommend. Would bolt right up to your transmission. I think the 5mge engine mounts would bolt it right in where your 22re was. worth looking into.
