I wish some yotatechers lived close enough to help with a swap like that.
nobody around here knows how to do a motor swap unless it involves a Chevy small block. lol

i am currently doing this swap into a 89 2wd hilux with a 04 motor .. my question is . if i used a 04 dash with wiring wouldnt it plug right up to the dash harness/engine harness plugs next to ECM?

Yes. Other than that, your lighting is just about the only original wiring you'd be using. Are you trying to use all underhood wiring from the 04 including the fuse box and all? If so, the engine and driveability factor will be plug and play after you adapt the dash into it. I'm ready to do this swap, but I'm waiting until I can get a complete truck to swap from. Which is an issue you may or may not run into depending on if you're using the truck that your engine came out of. I don't know enough about those trucks, but I'm sure there are differences between models and... Stuff...

This happened when I swapped a 2003 3RZ into a 1984 Hilux. The scenario was opposite in that I used the Tacoma sender in the tank but kept the original Hilux instrumentation. The Hilux fuel gauge read "E" when the tank was full and "F" when the tank was empty. Our crude solution? Took a sharpie and blocked the lower portion of the "E" sign so that it appears as "F", and used white-out to paint on a lower section to the "F" sign so that it appears as "E". The gauge simply ran opposite of everything else! I never drove the truck at night but I assume both lettering would appear as "F" with the dash lights on!
If you use the Tacoma fuel sender then of course this won't be an issue.

WELL IM GOING TO PICK UP THE DASH AND THE CLUSTER TOMARROW . GETTING IT FOR $160 LIKE NEW CONDITION WITH THE WIRING .. SHOULD I GET THE BODY HARNESS ALSO? I BELIEVE IT INCLUDES THE WIRING FOR THE o2 SENSORS . CAUSE I HAVENT SEEN ANY ON THE ENGINE HARNESS . OR CAN I JUST WIRE THEM INTO THE ECU?
YES THATS A GOOD IDEA IM NOT TO WORRIED ABOUT THE GAUGE AS LONG AS IT WORKS..
ALSO HAS ANYONE ELSE DONE THE 2WD 89 SWAP? .. CAUSE ITS TRICKY COMPAIRED TO 4WD .. THE CROSSMEMEBER HITS THE T100 OIL PAN SO DOES THE STEERING ..
HERES A PIC OF IT IN THE truck NOW

I used 100% of complete Tacoma harness including the gauge cluster, I also got the Taco wiper motor and made an adapter plate. The only connections I had to modify were front turn signals and washer pump.
Wish I would have grabbed the entire dash unit itseld and swapped it in. Maybe on the next one.

well no problem is . .i got a 5 speed engine wireing harness and ecu .. and a Automatic tranny dash and dash cluster and engine fuse box .. and i cant find the wires for the clutch start .cancel .. cause the dash wiring harness is from a auto so im assuming the wires run into the motor harness then down to the tranny? .. and the engine harness is from a 5 speed so it should have been on the dash harness... but i know that the small black with white stripe on starter harness 4 prong plug starts when 12v jumped so i find the 2nd pole on the ignition in start position wire .. connect them . and should work no problem ..
