22rte to 22re in 1987 Turbo 4Runner

Ok, I have searched for days, cant find ANYBODY who has has done this, with any relevant information....I have found some threads on this swap, but it was for the 86-87 TRUCK, not 4Runner, the 4runner is different with the digital instrument cluster(which I would like to retain)--not sure if that gauge cluster changed the whole wiring setup from a regular 22re or not?

I have a 1987 Turbo 4runner that I recently bought, the turbo engine was shot a long time ago, it now has a 22r that was converted to 22re by adding the upper and lower EFI Intake, there are butt end connectors on the hacked harness, the previous owner says he did the swap, and he ran the 22rte harness, 22rte injectors, and 22rte AFM, I cant get it to go over 30mph, it is just running so rich, it runs, but it runs horrible, not to mention just did a compression test, and it came back 130-120-130-120, too low for my tastes, I took it to a guy I know who has been a Toyota tech for over 30 years, he was baffled, he said there is just too much of too many vehicles / hacking for him to give me a proper diagnosis...His suggestion to me was to just find a donor 22re vehicle, and pull the engine, engine harness, ECU, and AFM, well I thought I got lucky and found a 1987(same year as my turbo 4runner) 22RE 4Runner, I just bought it, it is complete, and the wiring is unmolested, it sounds solid, it was rolled, but I drove it still, and runs strong... I pulled the engine out of it last night, and thought this is going to be a real easy swap, just pull the engine, engine harness, ECU, and AFM, and transplant it into my runner, since I know these are a matched set, and run good...
Well here is the dilemma, the Oxygen sensor on the 1987 22re is wired to the underhood harness on the drivers side of the fenderwell, the 02 sensor on my 22rte(22rte harness) goes OVER the valve cover, and ties in to the harness on the passenger side of the of the fenderwell.. Needless to say, I cant take the complete under hood harness from the 22re 4runner, as it wont unplug totally, it goes into the drivers side inner fender well, and there is no plug to unplug it, I really dont want to hack, and pray, I was hoping for a plug and play setup...ugh! Anybody know why Toyota put the 22re 02 senser plug on the drivers side under the hood, yet on the same year 22rte, it is on the passenger side of the harness? I wonder if there is another year of 22re 4runner that I could use the engine harness to make this work without cutting into the harness?? I would think somebody else has been through this at one point or another??

I must also say, I have tried a 22re ecu, swapped out to 22re injectors, and a 22re afm with the current setup, and still runs like garbage.. Thats when I decided to start from scratch with a known running setup(the rolled 87 4Runner)

I know I will probably get some people telling me to source a turbo engine, and put that in, but I dont want to deal with that problematic CT20 turbo, or throw more $$ at doing an aftermarket turbo, or a ct26 turbo, yadda yadda.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I swapped an 88re in place of a 86rte in a truck several years ago ,and ended up reuseing the turbo injectors ,ecm and afm. The only problem was the truck was higher geared and a automatic which caused it to be under powered.
I had to drill a hole and add studs for the o2 sensor, because the 88 o2 sensor was under the cab . It should work if you extend the o2 wire.

I think I may have it figured out, went to a local Toyota dismanteler, and found a 87 Turbo truck, and bought the harness off of it, it relocates the 02 sensor back over to the drivers side, will see what happens when I drop the 22re in!

Strip the dash out of the smashed up truck and remove the fenders. Remove the in cab harness, fuse blocks everything intact this harness matches the 22-re engine harness and all you have to do is unplug connectors. Do the same to your truck remove the in cab harness to get rid of the Hillbilly hack job. Install the uncut harness plug into your truck plug it into the 22-re engine harness, put your truck back together. No wiring to try and figure out, easiest way out of this mess. The time it takes to do this is about a day, I'd bet you have already spent several days trying to figure out the mess that the PO left you.

I swapped a 22R-TE over to a 22R-E in my 86 pickup. I don't know what you're talking about with not having diagnostic plugs in the harness, mine has all of them.

I ran the entire original 22R-TE harness, had to extend the O2 sensor wire, but that was it. I ran the turbo AFM on the non-turbo airbox, ran the turbo injectors in the non turbo motor. Everything plugged right in.
