22re to 3.0?

I was thinking about switching out my 22re for a later 3.0 V6. Has anyone on here done this? How reliable are the 3.0s? Does it bolt in or require engine mount relocation? And also does it bolt up to the W56(I believe that was the 5 speed, correct me if I'm wrong) tranny? Any information about this would be very helpful. If you guys suggest another motor then I would like to know that as well.

1) No a W56 is strictly for an inline motor. The 3.0 used the R-series tranny (its either the R150F or the R151F). These trannies have WAY larger bearings than the G and W trannies. One of the above mentioned is for the 3.0 and the other is for the turbo'd 22RE.

2) Most would actually consider the reverse of what you're thinking. I have owned both a 22R (not even fuel injection) and a 1992 V6 4Runner. The V6 ran great at the time, but the power difference is very low... heck good luck FINDING the difference. THe gas mileage SUCKS.. I think its even worse then your 22RE but there have been debates about MPG for the 3.0. Also, the 3.0 pops head gaskets like the 4banger! Except it takes about double the work because there's two involved with an intake that HAS to come off. There was actually a recall for the 3.0 where Toyota owners could have the top end issue solved (sorry, only know this on vague terms, don't know what EXACTLY caused all this hubbub).

SUGGESTION?

Use that cute little search feature either on this website or on various Toyota forums and research either "Tacoma 2.7 inline 4" or "Tacoma 3.4 V6". THese engines are much better.

Or, if you wanna really do something sick, there are people that have already mastered throwing a Lexus V8 in one of these little boogers. Imagine what that'll do!

I'd suggest the 3rz. I've been wanting one of those in my runner for almost a year now, and I think those preform very well and are as bullet proof as the 22 with the power of the 3Litre. Bottom line, don't go with the 3vze. It's NOT WORTH IT!

All good advice. It seems to me that you want some more power and are willing to spend $$ to get it.

What is wrong with your power? Has it dropped off suddenly or always been like it is now?

You should post up what problems your having with the 22re because there is a wealth of knowledge on this site. Most people who have 22re's are stoked with them. I love mine although it isn't fast. It runs good though.
