1uz seal axle options

I'm selling my 7mge'd SAS'd 86 xtra cab and am looking at swapping a 1uz into a 90 4 runner my buddy is selling. I have a few reasons for wanting to do this swap.
1- my girlfriend is 2 1/2 months pregnant and I now need the seating capacity of a runner
2- I have a 1000 pound tent trailer we haul around in the summer camping and hunting in the fall. We drive steep grades to get to the places we like to go and I could use the power of the v8.

In my current rig I have chromoly axles all the way around and have a dertoit in the rear and an Aussie up front with 4:88 gearing. The axles have held up just fine to the 200hp 188lb tq 7mge, but I'm worried that a healthy 1uz will eat toyota axles up. You guys that have done whe swap and wheel your rigs, have you had any problems with ring and pinions? Which gearing and what tranny are you running? The runner I'm buying is an auto and I really done want to run and auto. What are my options there....auto or 5 speed wise? I believe that toyota 4:10'a are the strongest ring and pinions as they have the highest pinion tooth count....(10) If I use 4:10's and am not absolutely hammering on it when is sticky situtations, you guys think the axles will hold up? Thanks for reading an for any advise you can offer!

Yeah they have more power but are also smooth and well mannored engines. IMO
I would roll with what you have for now, that fact that you are thinking about it is the probably the best for now.
You are going to have enough other problems with the swap. I am a firm believer that is it not the engine that breaks things but the driver.

Can I be the first to say...Build Thread?

I will be doing a build thread for sure with this runner. On my 86, the only thing that is origional is the tranny, transfer case, cab, hood, doors and rear axle housing. EVERYthing else on it is from other vehicles. Frankentruck! This new project will not be a daily driver. And it'll be a longish build but I will post up progress. I know 7mge swaps in and out.....not so much with 1uz stuff. Still trying to figure out tranny options

If you already have chromoly axles your weak point is now the ring & pinion or the transmission output shaft. I run 37" boggers on my 1uz swapped 89 and I'm still using the stock rear axles and have had no problems. I'm not a throttle jockey though either. If I start having issues I will look into a 35 spline high nine.

I'm the same as you....not a 'pin it to win it' kind of guy (not anymore lol) What gearing and tranny are you running with your 1uz? I'm thinking if I can get away with it I'll run 4:10's as they are arguably the strongest ring and pinion set. I have a few cases sitting around that I could throw together if I'm wanting to really crawl.

5.29's and the tranny is the factory Lexus auto with dual 23 spline turbo transfer cases.

Toyminator, how long did your swap take? Any major issues? Sounds like you have a sweet rig on your hands

Yea man, sounds like a killer set-up! What are your RPM's at highway speeds? I'm thinking of pulling my built axles out of my truck before I sell it and swap in some stock axles. All my axles gears lockers brakes disc swap and crap I'd just be buying and putting back together. I figure ill swap in a 5 speed and see how I like my 4:88's with whatever tire size I run. My 7m, 4:88's and 35"s are great....and I also have 4 heavy duty chains for snow hunting and a bit if insurance when snow wheeling. They are pretty much brand new and I don't really want to part with them but might end up running 37" truxxus m/t's

Well it took a year and a half but that's because I would start and stop working on it for extended periods of time. I also completely re-did the whole body and painted the truck. The engine swap could be done in a couple of weeks of evenings if you really wanted to.

Here is my build thread. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f161...e-swap-207835/

Love the 1UZ engines, I have thought about trying to stuff one in a 2wd. I imagine I could turn a few heads down at the drag strip.
