Here's a picture of the 3.4 swapped 4Runner, my off-road beast (been under construction since I had my daughter LOL) and a set of 38" Toyo's for the beast (hopefully it'll be on the road again in 2010). I have a bunch of miles on the swap. I drive the truck a few hundred miles every week. I'm running 285/75/16 tires now with cruiser rims. This size tire really helps with the highway RPMS.
Here's a picture of my daughter. She's now 2 and a half. She wasn't even born when I started this swap. LOL!

Great work man, thank you for posting up all your trials. I have a 94 4runner automatic 3.0 with 190k that will at some point blow up. When this happens I'd like to do the same swap. I'm a pretty seasoned shade tree mechanic who isn't afraid of doing this, but I still have some concerns. I want keep it simple and go with a 3.4 auto and if at all possible find a donor for the engine and drive train. What year model would you reccomend?

All I can really say is good luck.
I don't think you can even get online wiring diagrams for the 88. The last time I looked on the techinfo.toyota.com website for wiring diagrams they didn't have any for anything older than 1990. You'll have to find someone with them or buy the books.

There are a lot of other threads around here that should have more than enough information for your swap. Check also https://www.toyota-4runner.org/.
The swap itself it fairly easy, if you got the right tools and enough time. I did a 3.4 swap on my 93 auto 4Runner and then a 5-speed tranny swap about 5 years ago. Hit me up if you got any questions!

My 1994 pickup
The 3.4 engine I'm using is out of a 1997 5 speed 4Runner and has around 80,000 miles on it.
I will not be using any parts from Off-road Solution. They offer quality parts to people that don't have the time or want to find the stuff are the parts store. I'm a cheap bastard and have a AutoZone within walking distance of my house so I'll be using parts you can find from there.
My plan is to try and document this swap for other people out there that are interested in doing this on a budget. I'll try and keep a total cost break down and a parts used list for you guys.
I plan to do the wiring myself. Splicing wires using 2 Toyota wiring manuals is not that hard and will save a lot of $$$.
Motor is in the truck and bolted to the transmission.
Here's some pictures for you guys.

I hope this isnt a old post o would like to know how much would it cost to put a 3.4 in my 1994 Toyota pickup pickup the head gasket blew yesterday the coolant is all in the engine and I just cant let it go I spent to much money on it as is my last motor was a V6 3.0 EFI I will not be doing it a mechanic will.I would love some advise and how much it will be before i talk to him..
- I just started my 3.4 swap into my 93 extra cab 4x4. I bought the engine about a month go and have been acquiring the necessary parts since then. Today I received what I'm hoping is the last components I need to be able to stab this thing in and get it mounted. So far I'm into it for about $3650 in parts. That's engine, wiring harness (custom made by Off Road Solutions, expensive but worth it in my opinion), ECU, clutch, flywheel, starter, timing belt kit with water pump (just to be safe), and a few other odds and ends. I'm expecting that figure to go up probably a couple hundred more by the time all is said and done, as these kinds of projects always turn into nickle and dimers the closer to finished you get. There's a few things on your 3.0 that can be used to get the 3.4 fitted to your truck, i.e. motor mounts and oil pan and pickup, to name a few. I don't even want to know what a shop would charge for the labor, but I'd imagine you could close to double that figure.
