I've got over 300 miles on the truck and it's doing good. I still don't have the hood on.

Thanks for all this info. I have a question about what did you use for the clutch? I heard that the flywheel for both the 3.0 and 3.4 are the same. Can you use the 3.0 clutch also? And what about the t.o bearing and pilot bearing?

Thanks

I used the 3.4 flywheel, pressure plate, clutch disk and pilot bearing. I used the 3.0 throw out bearing.

Really nice looking swap! Wish I had the know how for that kind of thing.

1uz Celica...wow. That would be awesome!

Planned stuff: Pre-runner light bar with Hella 500s, small lift
Stuff I'd do if I went crazy: SAS, 7mgte or 1UZ swap, and as much offroad goodies as $$ will allow.

Thanks.

It was so much fun I got another 1990 4Runner to swap another 3.4 with an automatic in. My woman doesn't like driving the 5 speed. I understand what she is saying, It's a real pain (even dangerous) to drive the 5 speed when you have a child in the back seat wanting attention.

I'm still trying to find a 1970-1974 Celica in good shape to swap my 1UZ in. It'll be cool. It'll have rack and pinion steering maybe a 5 speed, 9.5" FJ80 ring & pinion, etc, etc, etc. If anyone finds one in good shape let me know.

the only 2 parts i bought from ORS was the crossover and battery tray.

Crossover because everyone i talked to said it would cost more to have them fab it and i didnt have the time to do it myself. plus there's is really very nice and well put together.

the battery tray because i wasnt any extra shipping and i didnt want to have to screw with that cause i got myself into a real time crunch at the end of the swap i was moving out of state and was already 2 weeks late.

My muffler shop said if I bring them the motor before it's put into the truck they'd do the crossover for $100.00 using the stock Toyota flex joint.

I'll get in touch in a few weeks to see if you still have it. What I do need is a Auto for this truck. I'm thinking the transfer case is messed up but it might be the transmission to. It will not move if you have the transfer case in 2 HIGH or 4 HIGH. It's fine in 4 LOW. I'm hoping it's just the transfer case. Anyone have any ideas?

You are correct on the drop. It's a passenger side drop. I think the transfer case rear output is also off center to the passenger side to because the rear FZJ80 axle I have is offset a few inches to the passenger side.

Is the A343F's tcase full-time with a lockable center diff, or am I thinking of something else? Are there any pros or cons to this other than a bit more wear and tear on the front?

Greg, I'll keep an eye out for celicas.

You are correct DH6. The cruiser transmissions are full time.

I know the AW4 transmissions in Jeeps are built by Aisin and share the same internals as the A340H. They have a mechanical transfer case like the A340F that come in the Tacomas and new 96+ 4Runners. The AW4 has a passenger side drop transfer case unlike the A340F.

I have a buddy with a few good AW4's so I'm thinking about trying to make one work in this truck. I have to measure it to see if it's to long or short. We'll see.

Wow...good to know! I find it amazing how some folks on this forum can find parts from one engine or make and fit it on another. Pretty slick stuff!

That and just figure out the cross member. It's to bad this is the womens little truck and not the beater or I'd put a Dana 300 behind it so I could do front digs.

Greg!! Sorry I havn't chimed back in sooner, way busy, as I'm sure you are.

Let us know if the overheating's solved, and oh yeah, you would've been drooling today!! Buddy bought a 73 Celica and we've been going around hunting parts. There's a couple yards in Arizona, and a couple out in California, just visited them while there, that have so many parts, as well as rust free panels.... DROOOOOLLLLL...

I'm having to convert my automatic 3.4 wiring harness into a 3.4 manual harness. Sounds easy enough but it's a pain in the ass.

I'm been having odd things happen with the motor lately and I'm thinking it's because the automatic ECU is looking for signals from the automatic and it's not getting it. So I've redone all the wires and plugs so I can use a manual ECU. It wasn't fun.

It's back together. I took it for a test drive tonight. Seems to run a little better. No check engine light as or right now.

I need to order a plug for the manual ECU. I ordered the wrong one, so I need to get the right one so I can put the dash back together and get the A/C charged.

I was going to get a body lift so I can get the hood back on but I've decided a hood scoop would look more pimp. I just have to find one I like.

I got some brand new 33" for it to.

What's the normal cruise RPM for the 3.4 at like 70 miles per hour? I'm just a little over 3000 RPM's at 70with 31" tires. That seems high so I'm thinking the 33" will bring it down a little.

with mine i run at 2400 i think around 70? so about 2600 if i had stock tires.

wait.... no
2200 at 70, so it would be more like 2400 to 2500 with stock tires.

i run at 1900 at 60mph

Granted I have a lift, TJM and rack on my '02, but I'm still running my stock 265/70/16s until they wear out.

Here's my current numbers:

70mph = 2150 rpms
75mph = 2350 rpms
80mph = 2550 rpms

hope that helps.

Thanks guys,

I'm thinking I have 4.56 gears so that's putting me up there. I'm going to see if I can find a 4.30 e-locker and put it in the rear, that'll bring them down some more. I'm planning to put a lot of highway miles on it so I'm thinking 2400 would be a good number. What do you guys think.

I'd put the 33's on and see how the engine responds before I do any gear changing (then again, I'm sure you plan on doing that anyway). AFAIK, 4.56s and 33's are the perfect match.

You're fortunate...larger tires can actually help your situation . Most have to regear b/c of larger tires. Sounds like you're just the opposite.

Keep us updated!
