techinfo had NOTHING for my 88 4Runner

Bad news for me! I paid the $15 at techinfo to get the diagrams I need for my 3.4 engine swap in my 3.0 88 first gen and they had squat for my 88!

I tried a few local dealerships and they told me everything short of "go pound sand."

Any advice here? Looking to do the swap code-free and with a mechanical speedo in the 88, I have my work cut out for me. Not sure if there is a VSS under the dash or not.

Advice? Help?

You will be very lucky to find an OEM 1st gen repair manual that's been scanned and ported into a pdf. It's just too old and uncommon.

Most people get away with chilton/haynes/alldata and accessing their engine model techinfo through newer model that use the same engine family.

If you're desperate for something original though, try ebay and/or craigslist. Good luck.

WOW. This is why this site sucks so much. To many web wheelers commenting on something that they have absolutely no clue what they are talking about like this guy

It is also very sad that people with this many postings still cant use THE SEARCH function on here.

Anyways this is what you will need to obtain the EWD for your 88 for the 3.4 swap. Not as simple as the online versions for the 90 models but still effective and accurate.

BAMF that is an awesome link, i have never seen that thread before. However, i am in the same boat as mutt and would love to have an FSM for my 4Runner. I have downloaded TWO 1988 FSMs and neither of them include the 3VZE. What do yall suggest for that?

I would just use the ewd and a chiltons or haynes for everything else. The chilton and haynes is by no means accurate but good enough for general info mechanically. other than that I would just search the forum for specific related things not covered by chiltons. Other than vacuum system on 3vze the 3.0 and 3.4 are very simple straight forward engines.

Thanks BAMF. I did do a search but have not found the diagrams I need for a 3VZ 88 4Runner. I did call the 800 number but the electrical diagram volumes (2) are both back ordered. That is what prompted me to just do the techinfo link. When that failed to produce I decided to ask for a bit of help which I am still needing.

I do appreciate your response ,albeit a bit condescending. I hope this board hasn't been too tainted by the likes that prowl over at Pirate.

Mutt, My initial post was not directed towards you. You are a newb with a valid question. You will hopefully learn how to use the search function. what is bogus is the post that I quoted in my thread. Its very agrivating to see someone like marko post with out knowledge of the subject at hand. Post like that is what make pirate a better forum in most ways.

As a warning be very careful on this forum. The majority of this forum are people like marko. There are some good things on here but all in all pirate is very valuable. Pirate however just puts you on a fast paced learning curve of how to use the search function. But is very effective at keep out misinforming post but flaming. Cant do that on yota

It sucks the the EWDs are on backorder. Without that you are at a stand still. I must have been very luck when I ordered mine then.

No worries brother, we're all good. I'm a bit frustrated at myself for not being able to find very basic swap answers and kinda knee-jerk responsed. My bad.

Pin printouts for my 3VZ ECU are eluding me. Simple question like does the 3VZ require a VSS input and if so where the hell is it on my 88 (speedo not currently working so that doesn't help matters), bellhousing/t-o bearing combinatios (think I have that one figured out), and how much of this will I have to redo when I SAS - exhaust specifically?

Putting a 1990 supercharged TBI with 700r4 in my 1972 Blazer = easy; 5 wires literally.

Putting a Cummins 4BT in my 67 Bronco = not bad; welder, plasma, and one wire.

Putting a 3.4 in my 88 Runner = "Damn, did Toyota change the wiring and tranny configuration each and every year of production!?"

Different forums for different tastes, no different than any other hobby, religion or subject. Pirate has great tech, but the other BS gets old.

Grouping us all into the "majority" of being like "marko" is blatant misinformation.

You can open the ECU case 4 screws each side. On the board will be printed Abbreviations for the terminals. This is true for my 95 and swapped ECU. Maybe this will help.

Your local toyota dealership can still order the factory ewd manual if needed. I just bought a new one for the 88 truck and 4runner threw the dealership I work at.
