JasonYota's 3.4 swap started

Hello everybody, I've been reading on this site for some time now and I have decided join when I bought my 1st Toyota, and a 2nd Toyota three days later. So here is the start of my build thread.
This build is ongoing and I work on it when time and funds allow.
My recipient truck is a 1993 4x4 extra cab 5 speed 3.0 169K miles I bought with a blown head gasket and a rod knock.
My donor is a 2000 4runner 2wd 3.4 automatic 167K miles that was wrecked on the front end.
I have experience turning wrenches so that part of the swap I am not worried about, but like most people I am a little intimidated by the wiring. I have an entire donor so I should be okay, I think all I need is a ECM from a manual trans 4runner and repin the plugs on the harness to have no codes show up.
It took two days to remove the 3.4 by myself. Most of the time was pealing back metal that was crushed in the wreck. I plan on doing a full tune up, like timing belt, plugs, wires, water pump and other things.
The next few days I plan to download the FSM for the recipient and donor vehicles.

This is the donor 4runner. It was in a one car accident, guy said his son went off the road and took out a road sign. Air bags did not deploy but he walked away without a scratch.

Thanks down4denver,
No the rims are Ultra Motorsports with 265/75/16 BFG KO, They did have center caps on them but they were a pain to get off so I didn't put them back on.

Alright the past few days I've been gathering parts, but I have a question.
My donor is a 2000 4runner 2wd auto trans so I have been looking for a manual trans ecu. My question is can I use a ecu from a 2000 Tacoma manual trans? Or do I need one from a 4runner?

Those wheels look great with the silver paint! I saw a new FJ with factory wheels that look very similar to those. About your ECU, I'd like to say that either would work? Better yet I thought that i had recently read somewhere where someone wrote how to "trick" there auto ECU to work on a manny? I know it said something about since the auto wont start unless its in park. Manny wont start unless the clutch is engaged (or clutch start cancel button pushed) etc. they added resisters..somewhere? lol Im gonna just have to TRY and find it again for you. I dont want to add more confusion. For your own good dont make a decision off my junk memory! Honestly im not entirely sure if i need a different ECU myself! My donor is a 2wd and the recipient is a 4wd. Someone with far better knowledge will drop a line for ya. Ill try and retrieve that thread in the mean time

Thanks for the link denver, I stumbled across that thread a few weeks ago.
I've read that it is possible to "trick" the auto ecu, but i was planning on buying a manual trans ecu just for simplicity. The reason I was wondering if a Tacoma ecu will work is because they seem to be 50-100 dollars cheaper than a ecu from a 4runner.
I did get my clutch kit and flywheel turned this morning, and this afternoon I loaded up the 3.4 and got the crossover pipe made at a local exhaust shop.
Only parts I still need is a manual trans ecu... I think. Then drop the engine in.

Does anybody know the difference between a Tacoma ecu and 4runner ecu? I am still searching for a answer before I buy one.
Like would a 2000 4runner 3.4 auto engine harness work with a Tacoma manual trans ecu?

I don't know the answer but it seems like this question comes up pretty often. I'd suggest you try searching different terms. I do believe that question has been answered more than a few times. I'd help you but I'm on mobile right now.

This is the reason we strongly advocate buying a complete donor but it is what it is. Good luck
I did buy a complete donor. I knew I needed a different ecu before I even bought the 4runner(donor). And I've been searching since, Did you read my previous posts?

OK, now I can possibly help... See this sticky thread here, https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f160...-101-a-239002/ a little more than half way down the page. It's all about repinning an auto harness to work with manual ECU. Although I'm pretty sure you should have seen that already if you searched. If not it's a great 101 thread.

Also, you mentioned it, but I've seen several guys use an auto ECU with their manual tranny. The only thing you need to do is simply wire the shift lock release to stay open. It's 1 wire to 1 wire solder- easy peasy. I can find those threads if can't find them if you want a better source. I also have no idea how this plays out if you need to smog your rig or have it inspected in some way. I hope that gets you started.

Yes I've read all the stickies except mt goats and your How To A/C.
About repining the auto harness, that is what I was originally going to do until I read somewhere (I don't think it was on this forum) around 1999 and up they started using standard plugs, saying the auto and manual trans ecu used the same plugs and repining the auto harness wasn't needed. Since my donor is a 2000 the plugs should be the same, though I haven't been able to confirm this yet.
I am still searching if a Tacoma ecu will work instead of a 4runner ecu, because the Tacoma's are a good bit cheaper.
