How many of you are still DD your 3.4 conversion?

Over this last year, I've studied hard on the 3.0 / 3.4 to prepare for a upcoming project. However, one thing I've noticed is that a lot of people sell their rig not too long after. Why is this? Is the swap not reliable? Or could it simply be economic reasons?

Anyway, I like to know how many of you DD your 3.4 conversion and are completely satisfied with the investment.

"A lot of people sell their rigs not too long after [the swap]"? Really? This is news to me, it seems most people here tend to keep their truck after the investment, but I could see someone making decent money from buying a decent truck with a blown 3.0 for dirt cheap (under $1,000), doing the 3.4 swap then selling it off for $3-5,000.

Now for me, I wouldn't say I truly DD my 4Runner (that's what my Subaru's for) but I will drive it the 60 miles to work and back routinely and not question it. At this point the only hesitation I have with it is that stupid clutch pedal bracket (I've had it bust on me twice in 10 years and its probably due again pretty soon), but that has nothing to do with the swap.

I DD my 1991 pickup with a 3.4 over 60 miles a day for 1.5 years with out any problems.
I love the power with the 3.4 compared to the 3.0.
I tell my friends that this is the truck Toyota should have made.

Over a year on my swap and going strong

I have been running my 3.4 swap for around 16 months now in my 94 4runner. Not an issue one with the swap and it fires up every time I need it. I have a company truck during the week, but the weekends are spent in the 4runner.

No issues what soever with the swap but as it is a older vehicle I have had a few other minor items wear out. Blew the clutch rubber line two weeks ago and replaced the back up light switch a while back. But it is a Toyota and parts are not hard to come by.

Swapped and mostly DD since early '09. Just did a timing belt and tune up when the engine was out, had 107k miles when installed at 211k miles on the chassis. Just turned 260k miles on the chassis a couple weeks ago. I have a Subaru that gets better mileage, at least when the engine isn't in pieces in the shop at my work!

So count me completely satisfied, even with 33's and the stock 4.10 gears.

Red face

Once all the bugs were worked out of the one I bought it gets driven on a semi daily driver basis on the days I don`t need the pick up.

I can see selling if that was the game plan from the start.

To spend this much time on a vehicle it would be the last thing i sold much easier to be able to park under a bridge then have a card board box

Every Day...Like I stole it.

I was going to give up my 1st gen 4Runner for something newer and faster until I decided to do the 3.4 swap with a supercharger. I now can truthfully say that I will daily drive this thing now till I'm dead or it gets taken away.

I would DD mine, if I had a commute. Instead, I find excuses to make a couple trips into town per day so I can drive it! I just turbocharged it and now it's worse (the excuse making)

I wouldn't say mine gets daily driven but weekly driven for sure. This is only cause the daily driver commuter gets about twice the fuel mileage, not because of any type of reliability issues.

Daily driven for 2 1/2 years until recent accident that totaled the 4Runner.
The engine currently has somewhere between 325-350,000 miles on it and still runs like a top.
Just about finished building a pickup now with the same engine - hoping for another 2+ years of service out of it.

In my opinion, the 3.4 swap is the best thing that anyone can do for an older Toyota.

I have been daily drive mine, wheel it during the weekend and have had zero problems. I've accumulated about 40,000 in the 2-1/2 years I've had the swap completed. I rarely use my new truck anymore, this thing is super reliable and fun to drive, the only problem I have is the rear tires wear a little fast so I have to rotate the tires often. It's fault of the supercharger and a heavy right foot ;-)

DD for almost 8 years

I finished my swap in 2006 & other than time spent out of the country, It's been my DD since then. In 76K miles, it has required:

1 supercharger belt
Many oil changes
Walbro 255 Fuel pump (my fault for initially using a used spare from another project)
Fuel filter (preventative)

...and it should be said that I am absolutely unafraid to beat on it when the need/feeling/urge arises; I overbuilt it so I could. After initially finding all the R151F's weak points (and a set of 4.56s), I still treat it like a Sports UV, banging 2nd gear like a teenager in a Camaro.

I don't dd mine, I haven't since I bought my car that gets better mpg.

I will say I have zero regrets with the swap and don't plan to sell my truck ever.

The 3.4 is a happy motor...
