ECU to mate with 2001 4Runner Auto harness

Hello all,

I've sourced a 2001 4Runner with an auto tranny for an upcoming swap into my 93 4Runner with a 5spd. My understanding is that the 2001 4Runner was the first year they added the drive by wire to the runners. Despite the warnings on the complexity this will add, I went ahead with the donor due to the complete package and wanting to get this swap started.

So my question is aimed at trying to identify the best model year to source a MT ECU from since 2001 was also the first year they quite offering the 5spd transmission. I have yet to get through all the research on the necessary engine harness changes, but I'd like to get this box checked beforehand, if possible. So does it make most sense to go with the closest model year in the 4Runner that did offer a MT (2000) or are there options to go with a Taco ECU?

Also, if anyone has recommendations of members builds that included a 3.4 from a drive by wire throttle system, please post up a link. I'm working my way through them but I haven't run across one yet.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Eric

Best bet on a 3.4 swap is still a complete donor vehicle. Frankensteining always causes more issues.

Good luck.

why use a MT ECU that you will need to repin? the auto ECU works just fine once you jump the NSS

Hey Waskil... Thanks for the welcome. I've enjoyed reading through your build threads. A bit intimidated at this point, but really looking forward to learning a lot along the journey.

Hey Quicksilver.... So based on the reading I've done I hadn't found a write-up where anyone had successfully retained the auto ECU and not thrown a CEL code. Here in northern colorado any ECU code will fail me on the emissions testing. I saw in a repost you mentioned your swap was successful minus the CEL code for not seeing the auto tranny.

Definitely open to thoughts on this one.

Thanks for your feedback!

I should probably give a call and ask specific questions on how they will judge a 93 with a 01 engine, but when I failed my 02 Civic due to an o2 sensor triggering the CEL I was told that if there are any check engine lights on you fail the test automatically.

Definitely worth a check though before I go down the road of finding a different ECU.

i didnt wire up my CEL on my swap. mostly b/c of the auto trans computer would constantly throw codes. if it is a pre OBD2 vehicle i think it would be a safety only inspection and MOST of your inspectors wont know the difference between a 93 engine and a 96 engine if the install looks stock.

all my pre 95 inspections are just a phone call away from being passed. cant remember the last time i actually took them to be inspected

So I spoke with an emissions technican today about how they would treat the 93 4Runner if they knew I had put a 01 3.4L engine in... assuming they knew about this. As expected the vehicle would now have to pass emissions regulations as if it were a 2001 4Runner including all sensors, emissions components (2 cats), and the OBDII system. He did mention that a "CEL" doesn't necessarily disqualify the emissions test but it is highly recommended that it be clear. My interpretation of this was that lights will only draw more questions and digging into the system.

So the obvious question is what if they don't know about the engine swap.... this thread concerns me...

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f160...manual-230527/

My main concern is that it only takes one red flag during the test to send me to an inspection which would then bring in the fine tooth comb. I feel like the risk is too high to not spend the money on the MT ECU and extra Cat up front instead of having to rework all the fine details.

Maybe some fellow Coloradoans can speak to their experience with the emissions testings and how they got throught them?

Thanks again Quicksilver! One of the few downsides to living in Colorado!

Can anyone provide the toyota part #'s for a 1999/2000 4Runner ECU from a 3.4L, MT, Federal vehicle?

I've found the following but I'm wondering if there are other's that would meet the specs above.

89661-3D560
89661-3D561 (updated version from the info i've read)

I'm trying to stay as close to 2001 as possible.

Thanks!!

Sorry to bring back an older thread but I just bought an 01 AT 4x4 4runner last night. Going to swap it into a 95 mt 4x4. Did you ever figure out what ecu works?
