All 3.4's have a hole for a pilot bearing.
Lots of guys have been spreading rumors about automatic 3.4 motors not having the prevision for a pilot bearing. THAT IS FALSE! At least it is for all the automatic motors I've seen.
This picture is of a 2004 3.4 out of an automatic truck. Looks to me like that's a hole for a pilot bearing. ![]() I have a friend that's a 14 year Master Toyota Mechanic. I asked him this question a couple of years ago and he just looked at me like I was retarded for even asking. He says "it would be crazy retarded for Toyota to machine 2 different crank shafts for a motor that's built to have a 5 speed behind it".

Here's my disclaimer. Take the above info how every you want. I'm NOT responsible if, for some reason you guys find an automatic 3.4 with out a pilot bearing hole. All I'm saying is don't be mad at me. I purchased the above pictured motor today without knowing if it had the hole or not. I don't think Toyota would have done anything different on the older motors.
I've seen quite a few 3.4's from many different years and trucks and they all had the hole. The above pictured motor came out of a 2004 Tundra.

Do you know what year or vehicle the motor came out of?

Humn, interesting ... thanks for posting that up. No matter to me, as I already have my 3.4 - it came from an auto tranny '99 Runner and has the spot for the pilot bearing as well; but still interesting ...

Just my $.02
EVERY 3.4l auto I have sold has had the crank machined for a pilot bearing And I checked with my parts guy at Maita Toyota and there is only ONE part number for 5vz-fe crank's up to 2001 in which the change was with the snout and the balancer journal size only.
