5vz or 1uz?

5vz or 1uz?
I'm curious why so many go with a 5vz rather than the 1uz? It sounds like a more expensive swap. I currently have a 94 sr5 manual. 1UZ's look so cheap and I've seen a couple members on the forum with this swap. it looks like it requires some steering dampner modifications but other than that it doesn't look to difficult..
What exactly is required for both swaps, what would be the cost difference between the two? Which gets better gas milage and which makes more power? Also most importantly is the 1Uz a reliable motor? Cheers thank you

there is a company that makes a custom bellhousing so you may bolt the 1uz directly to the current tranny. This is my understanding...

I looked at both options. There are two companies that I found that make the bellhousing to swap to a 5 speed. One was out the the States, but I don't know if he ever managed to ship any. The other was out of Australia, and it ran approximately $1300, plus shipping, if memory serves.
The 1UZ requires custom motor mounts, custom headers, a relocation of the oil filter, a body lift, and a host of other custom fab work.
The 5UZ is a direct bolt in, using the stock mounts and oil pan. No body lift is required and very little fab work necessary.
So, while the V8 motors may be cheaper from the JDM, you're going to be out a lot more getting it to fit and mate with a tranny. That said, there is something to be said for the coolness factor about a V8 swap, and I might consider doing one in the future, or just S/C my 3.4 liter, instead.
