49 State donor for Ca build

Hi all.

Shopping for a donor Tacoma is much more difficult than I initially thought that it would be. Damn things are expensive even wrecked.

Anyway, being in Fresno, ca. (right smack in the center of California) leavs some areas like Vegas, Reno, Arizona, etc. open to realistic travel distance.

My concern is that a 49 state truck would be missing vital emissions components that I would need to pass smog and the referee here in the People Repubik of Kalifornia.

Anyone know if there are differences that I should be aware of. I assume the two Cat's is probably a Ca. only advancement.

I still prefer to buy a complete wrecked vehicle so I have access to all the little knick-knack parts in my driveway rather than shopping junkyards.

There were a few of the later years that all 50 states had dual cats. My ex's '03 4Runner has 2, and she bought it in North Carolina. I don't know the absolute particulars about using a 49 state engine, I haven't switched my registration from Oregon yet. If I get to it before you get a donor, I'll let you know...otherwise I'd plan better safe than sorry and get a cali spec donor.

The 3.4 was found in other vehicles besides Tacomas; 4Runner, T100 & Tundra. The basic emissions device requirement is you must have all emissions devices that came with the donor vehicle, 49 or 50 state. It is not legal to add a device to a vehicle if it was not an original configuration. My donor was a 49 state 4Runner that was registered in Oregon and I was required to have all emissions devices that came on the vehicle.

Type "engine change" (no quotes) in the search bar. This will bring up links you should read through.
