3.4l swap into 85 4runner

howdy yall! i'm starting a 3.4l swap into my 85 4runner. I've started to get together a parts list and really see what i'm up against. i plan on buying a rebuilt 3.4 and a v6 tranny. i have a 96 tacoma (3.4l v6) to use as a donor vehicle but as we all know the drop is on the wrong side. the 4runner already has dual cases and built front and rear axles. so what i want to do is get taco width front (trailgear) and reuse the rear off of the 96 tacoma, my question, among many is can i use an adapter to mate the dual cases to the v6 tranny and do i need a new rear driveline? marlin has an adapter but it talks about using tacoma cases. mechanically this swap seems like a lot of work but pretty straight forward, the part that has me a lil bit nervous is the electrical (wiring harness, etc). i plan on posting threads throughout the build... any and all help and advice is greatly appreciated, thanks

5 speed or auto?

5 speed, I would find an 87-95 v6 5-speed, then buy the appropriate Marlin or Trail Gear adapter for your duals. There are guys that have figured out how to mate the various 4 cly trans to the 3.4 but I don't know anything about that, sorry.

Auto, I have no idea, but there are a few auto swap threads around here that have all the info you need.

If you haven't done so already, spend the $15 and download all the wiring diagrams (EWDs) and repair manuals for the Tacoma donor from https://techinfo.toyota.com/‎ I don't think they have info for the 85 though, but you should be able to find it around here somewhere.

Lastly, if you're in CA and need to have the thing smogged, call the SMOG Refferee's 1-800 number leave a message and they'll call you back in a few days to make sure you include and account for everything they will be looking for while you do the swap, it'll be easier in the long run; if you're not in CA, feel lucky you don't have to go through this proccess.

I'd use the axles already in the 4runner as you said they are built. Marlin sells adapters for a V6 manual (R150) to a gear t-case(4 cylinder). There are also adapters for the 3.4 auto to a older gear case.
