3.4 swapped running rough
I mentioned this in my other thread - but since I have got no replies I thought I would post it up on its own- the swap is complete as of last week it fired up but runs really rough. I don't have an OBD connector yet so I can't pull codes. If the mass air flow meter is disconnected the motor starts and runs much smoother? I checked the mass air flow as per the FSM and it checks out. I am in the proccess of checking othe input signals to the ECM but I don't really know where to start. Anyone have any advice? What are the basic signals teh computer checks to run? I would assume Cam/crank sensors for timing, MAF for air volume/density, throttle position and........? I was really hoping this would have fired up and ran smooth, not my luck I guess.

Do you have the correct airflow meter? The wrong year airflow meter will cause the condition you describe. Airflow meters need to be 96-98 or 99 and newer. Make sure they match the year of the ECU.

I would also check your grounds, including the ground for your igniter. Make sure it is good and clean under the bolt that you presumably attached to the passenger side fender.

Thanks for the replies - Everything came from the same truck -'99 Tacoma 5spd- I have checked grounds. I even ran a separate ground to the ignitor from the block as recommended in many threads here. I don't think there is much more I can do without hooking up the OBD port and pulling codes.... so close and yet so far....

Oh, give the vacuum lines a good checking, too. Spray them with carb cleaner (gives a temporary seal) and see if the idle smooths out.
Mine ran a bit odd until I found a split hose.

Now I am really needin' help... got my OBD port wired up and borrowed a reader - code read error- checked out the pins on the OBD port - I have 11volts at the data link wire???? It should be 'pulse generation'.- i would assume this means fluctuating betwen 0- 12v- mine is a constant 11v. AS mentioned in the earlier post- if I unplug the MAF it smoothes out.
Anyone? Pretty please. ![]()
