I just had my xover ceramic coated locally here in Vancouver for $60 CDN. He originally qouted me $80 but I wanted it shiny and they did it black so he dropped the price. In any case it was a lot less than I thought it would be.

Apparently I don't have that receipt anymore which was for Jet Hot's sterling Silver coating on the cross-over and both exhaust manifolds. However, I do have a receipt for that coating on a set of '01 3.4 manifolds and that was $160.

$225 - $240 sounds like what I paid for coating the cross-over and other set of manifolds, so about $80ish for the cross-over alone is probably right. They also give a first time order discount of 10%.

I had mine ceramic coated as well. No issues. It was pretty cheap too. Atleast I thought it was. IIRC i think it came out to just about the same price to buy the header wrap. Maybe less

I got the crossover welded up and ready to go to the ceramic coater today. The left bank tubing was damaged worse than I had though. It was pretty thin after getting too hot, scaling over and flaking off, both inside and out. So I ended up laying down a 2nd layer of tubing over that whole side. I used .078" thick strips about 3/4" wide and 4" long. TIG was used to weld. Some strips were lapped over to the good side to provide support and help prevent future cracking.

I just bent the strips to roughly the shape I needed and tacked in one spot. Then used a hammer to form the strips more like needed. They form real nicely near a tack, so it was tack and hammer, tack and hammer.

Are you going to add any bracing to the lower portion of your cross-over?

Dropped off the crossover at Performance Coatings (OKC) today. They had 3 different options for ceramic coatings.

The standard silver color coating which they said was good to 1400* F. I didn't ask the price since I often run higher than that temp.

A black coating which is goes a little higher (IIRC it was 1600* F) $50

A titanium coating (darkish gray color) good to 2000* F for $65, I went with this one.

They said it may take 10 days.

Got some new exhaust gaskets and lock nuts form the dealer.

The old gaskets looked pretty good and I was tempted to reused them but they are such a PITA to get to I didn't want to risk a failure. I'm glad I did after getting them home I measured the thickness of the new versus the once used and the new ones were about .025" thicker. They are compressed or crushed as the nuts are tighten down, forming a seal. The .025" difference was not visible by eyeballing them.

The nuts were in pretty good shape too, but the locking tabs weren't working too good on a few of them and a couple were rounded a little. If one was to round off too much I'd probably have to remove the whole engine to get it off.

The part numbers seen in the pic are for a 2001, costs were $9 each for the gaskets and $1.50 each for the nuts.

Finally got the crossover back from Performance Coatings in OKC. Looks like it was worth the wait, they did a great job:

The crossover going back on, I put on the new gaskets, cleaned up the studs with a wire brush and coated them good with anti-seize:

A few bloody knuckles later its back on:

Yes, one on each side was cut down some to make it easier to get the nut on and off where the pipe bends back sharply. I did that while the engine was out a few years ago.

ok.....I have a 95 4runner and REALLY want to get rid of my 3.slow, done a little research but need things clarified, so ive heard mixed things, first that I could used the auto tranny in my truck with the 3.4? Also heard that I cannot, I would like to do the swap but from what i'm hearing and reading now is to do the swap I would need...
3.4
auto tranny 96+ and a gear driven tcase from an older taco with the output on drivers side to keep the ifs......yes I know I know, sas swap, just not sure which would be better to do first, since if I do an sas swap now, later I would need a different axle for a reg setup for a 3.4 and 150r auto tranny...
Any info tips ect. are greatly greatly appreciated

you can use your A340H 3.slow tranny with the 3.4 it just requires you to do the wiring harness conversion or have someone that knows what they are doing do it. i used to do them but im to busy with other things and it would litterally probably take me the better part of 6 months to a year to complete a harness not because it would take that long but because i have to many other demands on my time. if you want to use the A340H thats in your truck currently then u need to find a 3.4 out of a T100 OR at min. a wiring harness and ecu out of a T100. PM me if you have any other questions. As far as i know i was the first to use the A340H in its stock configuration with a 3.4 swap.

MT Goat- Props for doing the cleanest swap I've ever seen. So did this beast get a straight front conversion yet? I have a 91 4runner with a straight axle swap and I'm in the process of doing this swap. Thanks for the info and time writing on this thread.

Just a little update, everything is running fine. The Marlin Crawler dual cases have an slight oil leak which drips on the garage floor now.

I've gotten a few PMs about MPG so this my best answer to that:
Quote:
Interesting about the MPG, 1st its about the same as the 3.0 was, 2nd it doesn't seem to matter if I'm driving 85 or 55, its still about the same LOL. So bottom line... I have double the power for the same MPG.

Here's some MPG numbers, but keep in mind my rig is heavy with extra equipment (winch, sliders, custom bumpers front and rear, dual cases...etc) About 16-17 highway, 13-14 city. On my last long trip the best was 18 with a few 17.5s in there too.

Auto tranny doesn't help either.

Hey Dale! Hows that cross over pipe treating you? Mostly I'm checking because I'm finally tackling mine and am concerned about the heat on the x-over. I wanted to check and see how that titanium ceramic coating was holding up now that you've had it on for a few months.

just a heads up, I pulled the engine and trans from my truck the other-day to put into a 4runner. (trucks got a bent frame, and 4runner had blown engine) Anyway i pulled the crossover off to inspect it just to check and see. and guess what i found. Yep you got it I found a crack in that Y. it was about an inch long and was very thin but it was cracked. ill post picks up tomorrow of it after i had it fixed. So you all might want to check those crossovers again. Especially since ORS isnt around to get knew ones from.
