3.4 swap question
i have a 3.0 manual tranny in my 4runner, do i have to get a 3.4 that was manual also, or can it be from an auto

It will make your life infinitely easier if you source your 5V from a manual. Be sure to get all the other stuff from the same truck, if at all possible (ECU, bolt ons, ect.) It is also useful to record the VIN of your donor truck, for future parts sourcing.
Read up on Mike's information at http://www.offroadsolutions.com . That will give you the lion's share of the info you need. Then read the various threads here concerning the 3.4 swap. You'll see why you want to try to get all the things you need off of one truck. Good luck - it's an awesome upgrade!

I second the Breknraj comments.
Even though a majority of the 3.4 motors are compatible with the older R150 tranny, it's the 3.4 auto ECM and wiring harness that will get you. 5spd 3.4 ECM's/ harnesses can be next to impossible to find, expensive and in varying degrees of condition.

When I found my engine, I made sure that it was from a 5 speed and that the yard where I got it from included the ECM and harness. Doing the swap isn't tough to do, mechanically, and the electronics aren't all that bad. The other, pricier option, is to have ORS do it, then it's practically plug'n'play. Mine was plug'n'pray for a while. But it's run strong since I put it in in August, 22 000 kms ago.

so you guys are telling me it must be from a manual? is there a way i can modify the auto wire harness if i get a manual ecm? i found a great deal on everything, engine, complete wiring, all bolt ons, its just an auto set up, i asked they guy to check if the crank has a spot in the rear for a pilot bearing and am waiting for a reply. the complete kit is $1200 with 78k miles and 6 month warranty

If memory serves, there are also some issues with different sensors and plugs on an auto to take into consideration. I think there is some mention of that at the ORS site.
The bottom line is that the job will be much smother to accomplish if you stay with the same style - manual to manual or auto to auto.

I used a 98 4runner harness (automatic) with a 98 or 97 taco ecu (manual). You are going to have to chop off the auto plugs and solder on the plugs for the manual trans, but you can get those off of your old harness. As far as the engine pilot bearing hole in the crank, I have never seen one that didnt have it. Even an auto tranny has to have it because that is where the torque converter rides. I was wondering what kind of manual ecm would be best for my swap? my donor motor is from a 98 t100 but it is auto. i plan on splicing the harness myself but was wondering if i need to use a manual 4runner, manual tacoma, or a manual t100 ecm. i have found each one but the t100 is a 2wd. i dont know if that makes a differance.

I don't have a definitive answers, but my guess is as long as the ECM is for a manual tranny/ 3.4 combination then you'd be fine with any model.
I didn't have any of the 4WD indicators still hooked up on my vehicle when I did the swap so i left those pins empty on the 3.4 ECM and it works fine. If I were you, I'd login to TIS.com and look over the wiring diagrams for all the ECM's you have to choose from. See what pins are there, and which are going to be missing. A complex process but most likely the only way to get a real answer to your question. Just make sure you get all the plugs for the ECM you choose so you'll have something to work with.

well after hours of resaerching, and calling and calling, i got the info i needed, i talked to the guys at ORS and was told to find another harness all together with a matching manual tacoma ecm. they said the problem was with the tps, it was a three wire not a four wire. i have found a 96 4x4 tacoma manual ecm with a matching harness for the engine. now i should have no problems with the wiring. wish me luck i hope to get the engine sometime next week and get started.
