3.4 swap driving & milage report
Well- I'm at about 7k miles with the 3.4 swap in my 93 4Runner. Some observations:
1. The power is spot-on for this truck. It's not so much that it's unbearable, but very very driver-friendly. It's always tempting to get on the loud pedal, as it sounds great. God bless the supercharger whine! 2. I have an R151F / 33"s / 4.56s, and I wish it had a more freeway-friendly 5th gear. Time for 35s maybe? My 5' tall wife might not like that, nor do I want to ditch the IFS anytime soon. 3. It's averaging about 19-20mpg, mainly due to short stint driving lately. On a trip up to Maine (from FL), it peaked at 22 mpg hauling 4 people plus vacation crap. I watch the AFR very closely & do datalogging runs every so often, and I've found a few spots where I can lean it up a tick. 4. Shifting the Marlin Crawler rebuilt trans is still relatively stiff; this is normal according to them, as the synchros take a while to break-in. It sure would feel better if it wasn't so notchy, but hey- I guess that's what we get for having transmissions that just break-in after the same milage that some trans' start to die! So for now, I'm up in Maine looking for some trails to tackle, then it'll be back to flat, boring FL. Pic is from FL before we drove up here... ![]()

Man, What a sweet ride!
I am considering doing the same to my 1995 Limited 4Runner 4X4 with Automatic Transmission. I am not a Mechanic at all, I need to find a place in Jacksonville to do it for me. I am looking at buying a rebuilt or re-manufactured 3.4 instead of buying used one. How much did the entire swap end up costing you? Thanks |
