Questions

And here's a list of questions that I have.
-Is my cruise control cable hooked to the right spot?
-Any suggestions on fixing alternator clearance issue?
-How do you hook up the vacuum lines for the front differential??
-If I get a custom line made for power steering idle up, which vacuum ports will it use?
-The two small vacuum lines on the top of the intake that are plugged, what are they for? (see pic above)
-Will I need the 3.0 charcoal canister as well as the 3.4 evap box?

That's all I can think of for now. Thanks you guys!

Your cruise control looks like it should work as far as the cable routing goes. It opens the throttle body when pulled, right?
On the alternator, I ended up cutting off the end of the bracket and just went back to the old school pry the alternator away from the engine and tighten the bolt when the belt tension is about right. It's a pain, but unless you cut and then weld the bracket shorter, you can't really use that tensioning system.
Those little ports on top of the intake were plugged on mine, too, no clue.
I don't know about the power steering idle up, I don't think I ended up doing that with mine, unless it was unintentional. As far as all vacuum routing, I used the ORS instructions and the 3.0 canister. If I remember correctly, they have a diagram for using the 3.4 canister as well, though. Check here: http://www.offroadsolutions.com/old/tech.html

I didnt have cruise. Cant help there

At first I tried to add some washers to space to the steering box away from the frame towards the driver's side. That almost worked fine enough but ultimately what I did was grab a steering shaft extension from a body lift and then take the stock shaft out of the column and cut the length of the body lift extension off. The allowed the rag joint to move higher up towards the steering column and thus clear the alternator swing. There are pictures in my thread on page 8

I never hooked the ADD back up, but should it really change much??
-If I get a custom line made for power steering idle up, which vacuum ports will it use?
I didnt use the idleup. Works fine for years now

NO idea. Mine look exactly the same and my stock 3.4 Tacoma do as well
-Will I need the 3.0 charcoal canister as well as the 3.4 evap box?
If you are going to try to smog it in California, you will HAVE to use the 3.4 rectangular box and all it components. The 3.0 stuff will all come out

That's all I can think of for now. Thanks you guys!

Thanks for the info you guys.

I'm not too worried about cruise, I have an aftermarket steering wheel so I can't use it anyway lol just wanted it to be hooked up.
I guess I'll leave the two ports on top plugged.
I have the 3.4 EVAP hooked up so I think I'll be fine with smog then...
Hopefully my buddy will bring his welder over and we'll get a new alternator bracket fabbed.

Ok so if i have manual hubs then, are the diff vacuum lines even needed?

-Dntsdad: So the idle up isn't required for smog? or at least when you got yours done? And I will look into your thread again, regarding the steering column

Today's goals:
-finish mounting air box
-put dash back together
-install cooling fan
-hook up battery cables

Well I didn't get as much done today as I had hoped, but it's hard to find motivation when it's only 30 degrees outside and I'm exhausted from work this morning.
I did however get the air box mounted, and the fan installed.
Started putting the dash back together as well. It's starting to look like a truck again!
I'll get some pics up in the morning of my progress.
Also if you guys could bump my previous post that would help.

Thank you! I'm also looking forward to start up. It's been a pain not having a vehicle for the past four months.
It's very exciting to me as this is my first engine swap that I have ever done on my own. Before this I had only helped my buddies with some of theirs.

Predicted Startup: This Sunday

Ok so this is kind of a repetitive post, but whatever.
These are my goals for this weekend. If my buddy brings his welder over and we get these accomplished, then hopefully I'll be able to start it up and drive it to work next week.

1. Finish battery harness (I'm unsure on how to do it myself)
2. Complete the exhaust and install O2 sensors
3. Install grommet and run trans lines through passenger floor
4. Fix alternator/steering clearance issue

-Before I drive it:
I. - Double Check
a. All wiring
b. Torque specs
c. Brakes
d. Fluids
i. Gas
ii. Brake
iii. Oil
iv. Coolant
v. Power steering
vi. Trans
vii. T-Case
viii. Diff F/R

Minor things still not completed, but not necessary for start up
-Dash/Interior
-A/C wire needs new connector
-Idle up? (still not sure if I even need it)
-Diff ADD lines? (do I even need them since I have manual hubs?)

After the first test drive, check:
-body lift torque
-ball joint torque
-rear suspension torque
-all engine related components

And I think that's everything. We'll be sure to do a one over on the engine before we start it.
I will most likely be buying an OBDII scanner this weekend as well.
Wish me luck!

Lock the front axle and Ditch the ADD

I would personally not bother with the ADD, I locked my ADD and put on Manual hubs. It is way more reliable and I know it is in 4WD when I shift the transfer case. I love my 3.4 Swap and you are making good progress! The end result is well worth the time and money.

Until I put a non-ADD front in, I just ran the "locked" vacuum line to manifold vacuum, thus semi-perm locking it. I wasn't running manual hubs at the time, so if I went out on the freeway, I'd hook up the other, "unlocked line", we'll call it. Worked good, but had to open the hood to do it. Worked good. If you've got hubs, lock up the front and call it good. Figure out the ADD later, if you so desire.

Thew battery harness is among the easier things to do.

Have you read through this https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f160...-101-a-239002/

I tried to explain it the best I could in this thread along with wiring up the starter

Auassay and VasinVictor:
-Both interesting approaches on how to take care of the ADD, I will soon be looking into both of them, maybe I'll be able to find a cheap locker!

Dntsdad:
-Yes I found that thread, thank you and very good info on it. Maybe I'll give it a go this afternoon if I have time.
-I also read through your thread on the steering column. I think I will try to fab/alter the current alternator bracket first, and if that doesn't solve the problem, will try washers/spacers. If neither of those work I will do as you did and work on the steering itself.
-One more thing: Do you know if idle up is required for any CA smog? I have read it might, but some people say it is not.
Thanks!

Talking Its aliiive!!!

Today was the day! Got the truck running and DROVE it for the first time since August!

Only had a few minor problems before starting it.
The alarm needed to be rewired to get power,
and I needed to buy a new starter.
We double, no triple, checked Everything, and turned the key...
Damn that 3.4 sounds good!
Got good oil pressure and temp
Haha my neighbors gotta hate me by now, between the truck and band practice... it gets pretty loud. and we started it up first before we got the exhaust welded together.
It runs and sounds amazing. The only code it threw was a P1135, for the O2 sensors, which I didn't have hooked up anyway.
It was awesome being able to drive again, after four months.
I also haven't driven since I put in the lift/rims/tires/engine.

However.... It was ready enough for a test drive, but it's not completely road worthy. The stuff that's left..
-Grommet for trans wires/O2 sensors
-weld exhaust Again with CAT relocated for smog ect.
-Install bumper+skidplate+hood
-Finish dash+interior
-Make sure all wires/lines are secured in safe places
-Figure out ADD stuff, or a locker.. ( I want to go wheelin!!)

--So for now I think the alternator/steering clearance will be ok
--I'll worry about idle up when smog comes, I have until April
--- I will need to get it smogged... Damn you CA! lol

I still have some work to do this week so I can get it to daily driver again.
Oh and a big thanks to all who had input along the way! especially those with detailed threads, it realllly helped!

Looks great, i just found your build , this is what i'm thinking of doing to my 92 xtra-cab, i have the 3.0 with 270,000 miles on the ticker, she still runs great but you never know with the 3.0

NICE build but one of the reasons i swayed away from the 3.4 was the lack of knowledge in my shop on the install.

Thanks you guys!
I wish I had made more of a detailed build, but this was a big project and also my first thead.
And yeah I did most of the swap on my own, but like I mentioned, had ToyOnlySwaps do most of the hard stuff cause I just don't have the time nor experience necessary. Good luck on keepin the 3.0 runnin strong!

Oh and an update as well.
I've only driven the truck a couple times since the swap as I still have a little bit more to do before it's 100% again, but it starts up right away every time, runs and sounds great still, and definitely has more power than the 3.0
I also have not encountered any problems since first firing it up, and the only code that the scanner reads is the same one that first popped up P1135 for the O2 sensor.
So far so good!
