3.4 driveline questions

Hopefully the guys that have completed swaps will have some insite on this. I have found a potential donor for my 3.4 swap. I have a 92 4x4 sr5 4unner 3.0 manaul. The donor vehicle is a 99 3.4 manual 4x4.

Here is my question. Can I simply pull out the 3.4 motor with tranny and transfer case and replace the existing components instead of using my 3.0 driveline (tranny and case)?

Yes I know its a very open question. What I'm looking to know is the 3.4 tranny and transfer case the same length as the 3.0. Yes I understand that with enough work you can make anything work/fit. Just trying to figure out if there are any unexpected issues I'm not seeing with my plan.

I have read many of the swap threads but didn't see where anyone swapped motor, tranny, and case from a 5speed on both vehicles.

Any info will be greatly appreachiated.

I'm sure someone will ask/wonder so the reason I would perfer to swap all togeather is i know the history and maintence on 3.4 and have less miles than 3.0 items. Also will have no issues with which flywheel or clutch to use if all come from same vehicle.

Thanks again

You're just making more work for yourself than you need to; use the 3.0 trans, transfercase, and drive lines.

Both the 3.0 and the 3.4 use an R150F 5spd transmission, but the input shafts (and thus bellhousings) are different lengths (using the 3.4's would result in the shifters coming up in different places than the 3.0's); all the 3.4s (except the T100s) used a driver's side front differential whereas the 3.0s all had passenger side diffs, which means the 3.4 transfercase would put the drive line on the wrong side of the transmission; and I've heard that the 3.4's R150F has a different bolt pattern on the back so you would need an adapter (marlin crawler or inch worm) to mount a passenger drop transfer case.

In short, unless your 3.0 transmission and transfer case is giving you grief, use them, and if they are, have them rebuilt and then use them; using the slightly new 3.4 trans and transfer case will end up being more work than it's worth.

As for clutch components, use the 3.4 flywheel, clutch and pressure plate (they're a bit larger than the 3.0's) but use the 3.0 throwout bearing (this must match the bell housing and input shaft), and use the normal pilot bearing (same part number for 22RE, 3.0, 3.4, and a few others). Some say that the starter should match the flywheel (what I personally did) but others claim the 3.0 starter will work just fine with the 3.4 flywheel.

No problem, there are enough things to worry about and get your head wrapped around with this (or I'm sure any swap) that it's easy to start overthinking things.
