3.0 to 3.4 Manual to Auto

Hey guys,

SO, I'm entertaining the idea of putting a 3.4 in where my 3.0 was... I currently have the 5speed... but the 3.4 comes with a auto... how hard is that to swap...Can I literally pull the whole engine and trans and drop the 3.4 in with the auto?

Sorry, this is new to me...

Only if the 3.4 came from a T100. Do you already have a lead on a 3.4 with trans and transfer case (plus all the other goodies needed for the swap) or are you still in the very early, dreaming stages?

It sounds like you may have the wrong impression that the 3.4 was only mated to an auto trans, which is not true; the 4Runners had a manual option up until 2000 or so, the Tacoma had a manual option for all of it's model years (95.5-04), the T100 had manual options as well, but I don't think the Tundra had a manual option.

Either way, converting an auto donor to work with a manual recipient is relatively easy. The R150 (manual trans) that was mated to the 3.0 is the same transmission that was mated with the 3.4 (with a shorter bellhousing/input shaft/throwout bearing), which means your existing trans and transfer case will bolt directly to the 3.4. The only "hiccup" is with the wiring, but there have been enough swaps documented here (you'll have to look around) that anyone should be able to tackle it.

Its also worth noting, that the transfer case for most 3.4 applications (all except T100) have a driver side output, whereas all 3.0/22RE transfer cases have a passenger side output.

Keep reading throug the various threads in here to get an idea of what you're in for and what to expect.

Thanks!

I have a few options on donor vehicles, but most are auto trans. I literally have a line on 4 vehicles. I'm ready to pull the trigger, I just need to see how this is going to work out
