1996 Engine Only with 1995.5 everything else
So I started my swap with a high milage 95.5 3.4L with the entire donor and I'm almost done. I have come across a 1996 3.4L with low milage and a good price.
The problem is that the 1996 is engine only, possibly wiring harness and no Ecu.
I don't know enough about it to know if all the 95.5 parts will work with a 96 engine (o2, MAF etc) and I'm fairly sure the 95 ecu won't work. I don't want to have to source 1996 parts as it would be a hassle and I need it running, but if I can use 90% of the 1995.5 stuff I'd go for it.
So with a 96 engine how much 95.5 stuff would work?

Thinking that if people use the 97 ecu for superchargers in the 95 96 engines why wouldn't they all be interchangeable. I'm thinking o2 are the same to. I don't think I'll have to much of an issue.

Compare your old engine to the new one. You may have some emissions things to move to the new one. Did the new one come out of the same type of transmission as yours? If not, I believe it entails additional work.

I was thinking that as long as I got a manual transmission ECU I'd be able to make it work. I don't know the details of this one as of yet, but I'll be going to have a harder look today after work.
As for emissions, so far what I've found is that the o2 sensors would probably work. What more might give me a hard time?
Again I'm hoping to use everything from the 1995.5 truck less the engine, wiring. Possibly and probably use the ecu.
I have not looked into the wiring differences if you had an auto trans engine yet. Im hoping it was a manual trans.

Buy the 96 motor, then swap all the various sensors and electronics from the 95.5 over to the 96 and run the 95.5 ECU; the basic motor is (or at least should be) the same.

To check your sensors compatibility I go on to a parts sight like Rock Auto and compare p/n from one year to another. I'll be doing something similar soon with a high mileage 99 3.4 auto and a low mileage 96 5-speed. Keeping the 99s harness, ecm, auto and engine components with the 96s long block.

But yeah I bought the engine and will be going for it. It's funny because I am on the last legs of completing my swap of the 95.5 engine, just have the wiring to do. So I'll probably just run the high km engine for a bit and go onto my sas and bumper builds.
If anyone can think of something that would not convert from 95.5 to 96 let me know.

Im under the impression that all years of the 5vz were the same internals.
So, if you are swapping long blocks there is no issue.
Toyota changed the injectors (different manufacturer) from an all metal housing to a plastic housing around '98, maybe they have a minute flow increase, but the injectors both plug into any harness.
The early and later model 5vz throttle bodies are the same physically. Throttle linkage may vary. TPS looks same from 97-99 models
Intake chambers the same. Exhaust same for model vehicle.
Emissions changes from years and CA emissions too. 2001+ all got dual cats, except CA where they ran dual cats from 99 up (i think)
alt, ac, ps all same
mild changes in bracketry across years/models
I am currently in early stages of a 3.4 conversion. I am running a '97runner long block and a'99Taco accessories, ECU, harness, exhaust, etc... everything swapped over perfectly.

I got a 1999 4Runner donor with 125K miles and also got a smoking deal on a 2002 3.4 engine with only 40K miles.
I used the basic engine from the 02 and stuck all the 99 parts on it and have no problems. Everything bolted up just fine.
It had a fly by wire throttle body and the later style exhaust manifolds but it all interchanged. I compared numbers on the sensors and injectors and they all matched.
The 02 was for an automatic so it had a vacuum port on the intake that the 99 didn't, so I just stuck a vacuum cap on it.
So basically, I used the best of what I had from the two and kept the 99 throttle body, harness and used the early style exhaust since it was easier to modify the crossover.

thanks AZTOY
like to hear that i am not heading any wrong directions. Ive swapped long blocks on 22re's for years and one 3rz. This is the first 3.4 i have played with, like it so far

One of the things that might be different is the TPS sensor. I have the 95.5 engine out of T100. It uses 3 wires instead of 4. The ECU from 95.5 doesn't work with it. Just swap the TB too and it should be fine. 95.5 ECU doesn't take into account of the Smog Ready status. You can use the original smog stuff. I passed CA ref. with 95T100.
