I've never changed the oil in my tranny (5 spd), diffs or t-case and it's very overdue. Since this would be the first change, can/should I go to synthetic or stick with regular oil? Either way, what brands do you guys reccomend? Amisol seems to be good stuff but I want something I can go to a shop and buy. Are the oils for those specific or do all 3 parts take the same stuff? Thanks!

Your Owner's Manual will have the grades, weights and qty. of oil to use. Here is what my '85 O/M listed:

yes, look in your owner's manual in the specifications section (back of OM)
just buy mobil 1 products if you dont want amsoil stuff. if you decide on amsoil, let me konw because I (as well as many others) on the forum are independent dealers. take a look at my writeup on the subject too: http://www.4runners.org/articles/difftsf bob |

I went with the cheap stuff, Coastal, I'm pretty sure on mine it was all the same weights.

Um...it has about 95k...I know, I know, I'm a horrible person for waiting this long! I think I'm just lazy also and would rather go drive it. But I have treated it well for those 95k miles. I try to drive really smooth on the street to minimize wear.
Bob, do you know what size washers/crush washers you need so I can get them before I start? Is there a problem with reusing the originals, I do that with my engine oil with no problems. And about my main concern...it sounds as if I can switch to sythetic with no problems?

I've never replaced the washers on my tranny and axle plugs except when I went to the new hex socket style plugs. Never had any leaking problems and some of those plus are/were nearly 20 years old. You can get new washers from the dealer, the drain and fill plugs are 18mm OD.
I finally had to replace the original washer on my oil pan drain plug last time I changed oil. I think it may have been original.

I agree with you Roger, replacing them might be one of those things they say you should do, but it's really not that necessary unless they are obviously worn out. It just seems to create more of a hastle when you go to change the fluids.

my wrx had a crush washer on the oil drain plug. I didnt replace it once and it leaked cause of the oil pressure. Some people get lucky but for something so cheap and easy to do it seemed silly not too. A crush washer is designed to be crushed once to form a tight seal around two illregular things, therefore its designed to only work once. But I'm sure it will probably be ok, but why risk it?
Of course it leaked under the pressure of the oil pump. Which the transfer case/diff/manual transmission dont have.
