testing compression

my runner is leaking oil (not to the point where it gets on the ground, but it makes the engine look messy). all i want to do is test the compression cause if the compression is good im just going to replace the head gasket and oil pan gasket and call it a day..... i know on my jet ski to test it you take both plugs out (2 cylinder) and put the guage in one and hold the throttle open and start cranking away..... is that what i do for the runner?! i know 2 stroke engines like the back of my hand, but i have never delt with a 4 stroke........

if doing all cylinders, i recommend removing all plugs first. otherwise no diff betweeen doing it on a 2 or 4 stroke.

Pull the EFI fuse when doing it so the vehicle does not start.

Just pulling the plugs will not stop the ignition from firing and you may fry the ignition (maybe not, but I wouldn't chance it).

How about just pulling the wire from the ignition coil for those that use a coil, cap rotor etc..?

Here's a good article. I think I'll test mine out now.

Probably might be a good idea to do a compression test and a leakdown...mine leaked oil, smoked like a fat indian chief and in general ran crapy...compression test was all fine...leakdown wasn't so great, but okay...but I just rebuilt the whole engine anyway...all new OEM parts and it runs like a new squirrel again.
