Re: Rattle coming from CV's
Hi Luke,
I repacked my CV joints recently after my sway bar disconnects catastrophically failed and ripped the boots open. Assuming no grease has escaped from your CV joints, it would be difficult for the CVs to rattle since there is literally a toothpaste-sized tube full of grease inside each CV boot. The lube is thick and I see no way for it to rattle. The common rattle cultprits are (1) worn bushings in the steering idler arm, (2) loosened shock mount and (3) loose sway bar. I will be replacing my idler arm this weekend due to rattling noises. BTW, there is no grease point on CVs. You have to pull the axles and remove the boots to repack.

Luke, can you shake the axle where it goes into the spindle grabbing it from the outer CV boot? If this sounds like the noise, then you need to grease your spindle bushings, tough, but it can be done by making a special tool, for this tool, you will need a spindle nut (54mm uses to hold your rotors on your 4WD) available from your freindly Toyota dealer, now you will need a 2" piece of water pipe, in 2" diameter, braze this nut on the end of the pipe, you will need a water tight braze job, keep it out of the threads, now add a cap to this pipe and a grease fitting on the end of the cap, now to use this, remove the hub or ADD cover, remove the bolt at the end of the axle if so equipped, now remove the thrust washer after removing the snap ring, and remove the spindle nut from the spindle, leave the second spindle nut on, now screw on your spindle lubricator, grease it from the zerk, it will take a bit as you will need to fill the air space in the new tool before it will push into the spindle bushings, as you grease, you will see the inner axle push itself out, relax, keep going till you just start to see some grease, now remove the tool and install everything except the thrust and snap ring, with a large screwdriver, install the bolt in the end of the axle and now pry under it using the hub stud (one that hold the hun on) as a fulcrum, pry to pull the axle back into the spindle, it will resit as its full of grease, keep going till it seats and you can install the thrust and retainer ring, then install the rest of the parts in reverse order. I dont know if this make sense to some, but those who have done lots of work in this area will understand, those who havent may not, print it up and it mayu help you out.

Hey thanks for the replies guys, i really appreciate it, but I think this sort of work is a littel over my head. After listening to UKmyers truck on Saturday I found that he has got the same sort of rattle as me so im not gonna worry too much about it at the moment, but just keep an eye on it.
Thanks again for the responses Luke

hey luke how did the wheelin trip turn out ? I am real sorry that i couldnt attend but i will have to cet down for the next one for sure!
I had an odd sound from the front of mine that went away after i had new boots fitted so it could be a lack of goo in the cv`s it might be possible to undo the clamp at the large end and squirt in some more grease cant say if it is possible as i have not looked that closely but worth a follow up.

Hey Mark the wheeling trip was ace, we had a really good time. Check out Joeys post in the 4 Runners section to see some pictures we all took, ya gotta make it next time man! it was a blast
Before you had your boots fitted did you get a kinda loose sounding rattle coming from the front end when going over medium/large bumps in the road? This is what mine is doing and its driving me crazy Did you get your local Toyota dealer to do it or did you goto a local garage? just curious is allCheers Luke

yes I did get a clunking up front and also a loud bang if i went full lock on pull away. I did not go to toyota to get it done as it is an import and they just charge too much.
i have a local guy who did it for me as he had there truck in to fit a new head after i blew the old one.and i asked him to get it back to me with a mot so i did not have to worry about messing about with any of it as i had the money at the time to get it done
