Need help with idle on 22r carb

New to the board, I have gotten great info reading all the posts, but here is one that I have not seen the answer to.

When I am in neutral and rev the engine to anything above 1500rmps and let off, the engine idle will go to about 500rpms and either die or go back to 750rpms. This happens when in gear or neutral, brakes applied or not. I thought it was the brake booster, but it wasnt, and just replaced the timing chain. TIming was checked and it fine.

Since my truck is a 1985 22r 5 speed I do not have a dashpot, so what how does the idle slow down to return to 750rpms.

Does anyone know what could be causing this idle problem.

Thank You

alright, this can be a little tricky sometimes. i've had a die-off problem in the past though...here's some places to start.

1. check for vacuum leaks with can of carb cleaner. spray around the carburetor, vacuum hoses, intake manifold etc and see if you can hear the engine speed increase or decrease.

2. check your spark plugs, often times a lean mix will make it die off. is it happening when the engine is both hot and cold, or hot or cold only?

3. has the idle mixture screw plug been drilled out and the screw in there messed with? often times, messing with that(you really don't need to unless your engine is really modified, its plugged for a reason) can cause problems.

let me know what you find...always glad to try and help

is my problem called a die-off, is that what I should have searched for?
1. I sprayed and sprayed carb cleaner and no vac leaks.
2. Havent check plugs but it dies only happens when my engine is at normal operating temp.
3. The mixture screw has not been drilled, still sealed up.

I have an external tach so I can see exactly what rpm I am at.

I have heard a bad fuel filter can cause my problem, I will change that tomorrow.

I have also heard that low compression can cause this, I have not checked, maybe later this week.

most definitely pull your plugs and a compression check isn't a bad idea. also, pull the hose off the AAP and see if its leaking gas. if your carb is original and hasn't been rebuilt, it might be time to look into that...
