My dilemma is this:

I have a 94 SR5 4x4 (the 6 cylinder) with 157,000 that is in need of a clutch.

My regular mechanic quoted me a price of $660 using a Napa clutch (he said it's a "heavier" clutch than I have currently). The dealer quoted me $775 for a Toyota clutch kit.

My regular mechanic has been good so far, but I haven't had any major repairs done by him yet either. So what should I do??? Is the clutch a pretty simple job, or is $115 a small price to pay to choose the dealer over my regular mechanic.

I bring OEM parts to the dealer all the time on our Honda and have them put them in. They could care less. So, in your case, I would get an OEM clutch kit from an online retailer and have the dealer install it. That should get you down below the NAPA option. Call first and make sure they will do this.

i think he was asking if the napa clutch is as good or better then the toyota clutch, since his mechanic friend said it was 'heavier'.. i too am wondering the same.. $450CAD for a toyota clutch just seems ridiculously high.

The NAPA "Brute Force" clutches used to be manufactured by Borg Warner.
If they still are, then they are probably "heavier" duty than a standard OEM unit.
Just make sure they aren't trying to use a "reman" NAPA clutch and you should be OK.

there's 2 important things to consider. make sure you're not getting a remanufactured unit, and make sure that the clutch disk itself has springs in it instead of rubber blocks. the springs make for smoother engagement and don't harden or crack over time like the blocks. toyota has used both kinds over the years.

i'm running a $60 ebay clutch(exedy) and it's holding up great. likes to engage/disengage a little harsh sometimes but other than that i have no complaints. i'll probably spend a little more and get one of marlin's or a centerforce next time around(e.g. when i have money to throw around at an L52HD swap)

i have an oem yota clutch and since i had my clutch put in it disengauges really sloppy out of 1st and into 2nd....im defintly going to get a centerforce nextime..yea its harder but i driove a 74 triumph for a few days that needed atleast 70lbs of force to clutch to the floor...god that thing sucked! the first day i was driving it hills were a nightmare all over again!

any of you guys know the correct model number? when i check centerforce's site they list 2 different ones. is one just heavier duty or? (for the 3vze)

Don't know about you guys but i'm going through hell with napa clutch i just put in part #is 47718 1 the throwout bearing was totally different than the oem so the dealer rep. told me to go with another style that matched the oem. Ok great put everything in grinds going into reverse & refuses to go into forwerd. hydrolics are fine and you can see the fingers get pushed in when you push the pedel. So it sounds to me like i hade the right bearing for THIER clutch but the oem style won't work dispite what the factory tech. stated. Anyone heard of this or am i the lucky sob that is first.
