...Upon my mom's wishes, I scheduled an apointment to get hte wheel seals done, and the shoes replaced at the dealer.

What should we expect the wallet damage to be?

You mean the axle seals and rear brake job? Both axle seals are bad?

Both seals blew. And, apparently, fluids make the shoes swell up, so were going to have that replaced too.

It is expensive

I'm having my rear seals done and I'm also getting front and rear shocks and coils installed and the damage including new rear shoes is under $700 from the Mitsubishi garage that sponsored me when I had my Eclipse. I'm sure the seals are solidly under $500.

Both inner and outer seals replaced here on both passenger and driver side, brake pads and machining the drums ran around 500. Call it a moment of weakness on the brake job, instead of doing it myself.

Not sure if the following is good or bad. Maybe both.

Two weaks later the driver side was leaking again. (of course that's bad) The upside was the shop replaced the seal and once again replaced the brake pads (though I think this time they just wiped out the drum) without so much as asking for cash. Not bad for a stealership. (they shouldn't have asked, but its a stealer)

that is why I sucked it up and paid a shop. I already had replaced drums twice and two outer seals (yes I have the diff breather extended) and was tired of the hassle. I paid for it all, go the piece of mind and warranty and have not had a problem since

I'm glad I did this myself. $5.99 for the seal and $19.99 for brake shoes sure beats $500-800. An afternoon job if you have the space and tools.

Im with you on that! I paid like $10 for both seals, installed one, cleaned the drums/shoes/cylnders and all was good to go. I ended up replacing the other side just for fun cuase it only took me like an hour for one side. DIY > all

the inner seals are a bitch b/c of the lock collar. OUter are a breeze to replace. you don't have to pull the axle shafts

doesn't help that they REPLACED the drums! that is where they got you. and the breather...why wouldn't they replace it? you told them not to, but how could they warranty the work when it was the breather that caused the problem in the first place?! i never would have let them do the work until i got a quote first. if you had done that, then you could have told them to turn down the old drums.

actually...did they even replace the drums? you should look to see. if they didn't, then the also jipped you on the 2 bottles of ky you think you got.

Yes, I did check to see if the rear drums were replaced. Brand new (I checked for the cracks I put in it when I was trying to take them off)

Apparently, the rear drums were "so soaked in oil it was impossible to machine them".

When I brought the truck in they said they were going to look over the truck to see exactly why it was leaking, then call me with the quote. When they called with the $800+ tax quote, I told them I was going to take the truck home and find money for the repair, adn thats when they told me about the $80/hour diagnostics fee, and that they spent 3 hours finding the leak.

I got OEM rear brake pads for under $30 and the OEM seals only ran me $7/each. I also had to replace the brake cylinders in the rears and that added about another $80 to the bill for the pair.
The dealerships just rape you since a solid reputable independent garage would have saved a person at least a couple hundred bucks.
