fuel gauge help!

On my 03 4runner sport v6 sometimes when you start it up the fuel gauge will drop to empty and the computer on the center console will show 0 miles to empty even though it has plenty of gas in it. The dealer is going to look at it Friday but I just wanted some input to possible problems or if any body has had this problem.

Thanks
Shawn

sounds like a bad sending unit or a bad ground... but it could be something else, not real familiar with that system.....

update

Just thought I would update this now ongoing problem. The problem was that the fuel gauge would drop to empty and the mileage computer would show zero miles to empty and there was plenty of gas in it. I took it to the dealer and they said it was a bad gauge cluster and replaced the whole thing. Even gave me a rental until the ne parts came in. That was about a month ago. Two days ago the same thing happened and again today.

I guess it is back to the dealer but in the mean time does anyone have any ideas on this.

Thanks
Shawn

Keep hammering the dealer. Keep all your records. Soon you will be off warranty, and they will try to charge you for it, if they haven't already. Start mentioning 'Lemon Law', and after three failed fixes, call your State Attorney General and file a complaint.

Just got back from the dealer and now they say it is the fuel sending unit. That is what I figured it was to begin with. But the last time they insisted it was the guage cluster. Who knows at this point.

Unhappy99 I hear what you are saying, I have been having problems with both my 03 runner and 02 tacoma. Today I talked to the manager of the toyota dealership and let him know that I was extreamly unhappy with both of the cars and the service I have been recieving and he said he was going to look into it. He is also a pretty good friend and I actually believe him, we will see he is going to get back to me today or Tuesday.

later
Shawn
