I used to turn the ignition on, push the throttle to the floor 1-2 times and turn the key and my rig would start and run at fast idle when cold. Now I have to pump the throttle numerous time (4-6) and repeat the whole procedure 3-4 times before it hesitatingly will start and "run" rough for a short period, no fast idle. Choke not setting or some soet of primer pump or diaphragm not working? Thanks!

Sounds like no choke. Take off the air cleaner when it is cold. The choke should snap shut when the gas is stepped on once. If not, it could be stuck, or the choke spring may be broken.

I had a similar problem, where I would try and cold start, although I would only have to pump twice, but when it started, my gear shifter, in neutral, would wag back and forth a good inch or two because the engine was idling so rough. I took it to a very trusted auto shop and they said I should just get a new carb, but I was also having problems with hot starts if I had let the car sit 20 min and then go to restart it it wouldn't want to start unless I did a flooded engine start, where you hold the accelerator down and crank till it fires. They didn't want to open up the carb to check what exactly was wrong, they feared getting dirt and grime from the surrounding engine inside the carb and then have to make me get a new one, so I don't know the exact cause, but I remember them saying something was totally shot inside, from when they looked down the intake(?) and that a rebuild kit wouldn't have the necessary parts to fix that. I shopped around here and found checkers had the best price, $260 for a holley, $311 with tax and core charge. I hope this has been some kind of help, sorry I couldn't do more, but my knowledge on carbs is next to nill.

I am having a similar problem with my truck as well. Choke doesn't seem to enguage, and idles slow/rough when cold. Also can be difficult to near impossible to restart after warmed up. I think I'm gonna change out ALL of the vacuum hoses and verify that they are going where they should (just purchased the truck two weeks ago, and previous owner hacked up the electrical and vacuum / emissions system). I think there is some vacuum assisted diaphram next to the choke that is operating it - perhaps that is the source of my problem. Anyways, I'll repost as soon as I figure out what the source of the problem is (if ever). Any more thoughts on a possible resolution to this problem?
