rebuild 22re or engine swap

was driving an 87 4runner... but now I think that I just blew the head gasket on my 22re...even though it only has 140k on it. I don't think the previous owner maintained it that well.

I'm looking into either rebuilding the 22re that is in it or swapping in an already rebuilt engine...either 22re or other.

The problem is I don't have money flowing out my ears so a $3000 job is probably too much. But I also see the benefit in putting money into a stronger engine instead of a rebuild.

With just a basic amount of tools...ie no welding or machining. is there a swap that would work and be worth it...or should I just rebuild what I have?

Howdy climber. I think if I were n yer shoes, I"ll rebuild that head, make sure the timing chain cover is good, get new timing set, oil pump, new spark plugs and wires, plus the gasket set, man it wont cost you no more than $500 your truck does'nt need a complete rebuild with ONLY 140K miles, if you change those parts that puppy will be ready to double those numbers.

i just went through this same delima. had a tired 22re, so i rebuilt one with o/s stainless valves, port and polish, rv cam, full rebuild kit and an aisin clutch. after all of that, i dont like that with the rv cam i start making power so high up in the rpms. i should have went with the crawler cam. with 4:88's and 33"s, im still having problems holding a decent speed on hills and even on the flats with a head wind. if i were to do it over again i would go with a 5mge or 7 mge. im already looking at a 7mge swap and sell my motor while its still fresh.

I say rebuild it, if you feel competent in your abilities to do it yourself you can do most of it with simple hand tools and shouldn't cost you a lot to rebuild it, a swap could cost a lot more by the time you track down all the parts you need and fab new motor mounts and all.

ebay

His stuff is great and he is super good to deal with you wont have any problems with him and if you have problems with his products he is quick to fix or replace the parts.

His master rebuild kit is almost everything needed to rebuild the whole motor for $209 plus $20 shipping so $229 total I have one sitting here for my rebuild and he did a few parts swaps for me that replace parts in his kit I already had no extra charge you just can't beet that kind of service.

I know SUPERBLEEDER is using his kit as well on his rebuild and there are many others here using his stuff so that should say a little bit about his stuff if you want a little more reassurance

As for the headgasket I found out the hard way it may not be your head gasket after all , check your timing cover seems that if your chain rubs through your cover it will pick up a water leak from the water passage leaking into the cover giving the oil mixed in the water look
