Need a new engine
I'm looking to replace the engine in my 89 4Runner. She's 20 years old and getting tired. Of course I would love to have one from LC Engineering or D.O.A but I'm not made of money and even if I was I'm so cheap I don't think I could part with it. I found one from toyotatruckparts.com that I liked the price on but couldn't find any reviews on. If anyone has any ideas or tips please help.

What you mean 20 years old and tired? Toyotas never get tired they never give in they never give up they are on until the last cylinder, as long as you keep oil in it and don't red line it. How you know you need motor?

I didn't say she was dead, I just know that the dyno said she was only pushing about 80hp. She's still kickin' like chicken but I want to bring her back to her glory days.

Try some simple things first. Tune-up? Adjs timing and idle. Is it 22re or 3VZE? One of the best things you should try is seafoam. Get 2 cans and trust me this stuff works wonders it did on my 86. Pour on hole can in the gas tank and 1/3 of the can straight into the intake.(Preferably line that goes to brake booster) and then our rest of that can in motor it self. mind you its gonna smoke alot from putting it in the intake but it will stop after 30mins to an hour. Run it for like 20 30 mins. And drive it around a week and see if shes come back to life a bit.

Tried that when I first got her. It worked good, but eventualy fell back off. I would much rather just buy a new engine and get it over with then keep doing these little half ass tricks to keep her going. I just don't want to go into debt to do it.

Valve adjusments help as well. Proper oil. K&N air filter. I mean its up to you but thats alot of money to just thow a new motor in. You want a brand new one which is gonna cost you anywere from 1000-3000$. Its you truck but still. 80hp on dyno? Was it done correct? You know 22res only bearly push 120 hp new? your not getting much. plus you don't use the full hp unless you at about 4k rpms constant. You don't use bearly any hp coing down the road. My 86 4runner is completely stock at 234k with it never rebuilt or anything done to motor except head gasket. Still running strong. It might have less hp then yours or more. What are you trying to get out of your truck? Trail rig? DAily driver?

Well have you even tried your yota on the trails? Did you like it? 22re's work their butt off trying to pull the truck so its no like its gonna glide through stuff and be a power horse. Check for vac leaks that can cause significant loss of power. Fuel trim? Exhaust leaks before O2 sensors? Can cause problems. I don't know what kind of cars you have had before but 22re's are not powerful. They do their job and are mainly desgined for longevity and reliability. Thats what toyotas are built for. Not fast but tough. if you get a new motor in it its not gonna be much differnce plus you run risks of improper installation and missing hoses for lazy turds and all kinds of blah.

You also have to remember that a chassis dyno measures HP at the rear wheel, while manufactuerers measure HP at the flywheel. There is something like a 20-30 percent loss of power through the drivetrain.

I have a header and 2"to the muffler/cat and 2 1/4" out exhaust and he tells me it should be at least 135 hp with around 120 to the rear tires and should have no issues running 70 mph in 5th with 35's and 5.29's will see soon enough.
total of $800 bucks for the parts can't beat it.
